Chalking this one up to blessing in disguise. After talking to my shop guy I think I had my pinion bearing preload was too tight. I'd rather have a failure a mile from my house than Moab.

Welded the pinion/bearings/carrier together. A good bit of beating with a sledge would not remove the pinion. Pinion is trash.
