80 k5 - frame off 6.0 LS swap

I feel you on garage space, mine is a 30x40 and all it has in it is my stripped Suburban, a fridge, an 88 Iroc Camaro 5 speed and a BUNCH of other crap. Sad that a 4 car garage can barely fit 2 vehicles and a lawnmower, which technically it cant fit at the moment and it currently makes its nest under the tree in the yard.

Despite my garage, here is some progress.

Still working on my fuel lines. Got them mostly side by side for the length of the frame, much cleaner. They are mounted with stainless steel bolts, stainless hose clamps. The inner line is the return line, and the outer most line is my main fuel line.

Radiator mocked up. Not completely supported yet. I hope these cheap POS radiator hoses don't leak, cause they don't look bad.

Doing a COMPLETE rewire. This is a painless performance chassis kit. Pretty swamped by the mess of wiring, no real idea where to get started.

From no stick to twin stick!! Those are dakota digital guages. Doesn't help with the wiring complexities really, thats for sure. I just know it'll be awesome when I'm done.

FYI: replace those collars on the T-case crossmember with a full length 1"x1" square tube. Those collars like to bend/ crack the frame when used that way.

Otherwise, nice build. I feel ya on the wiring harness. I did my K5 and am about to start my C10. Never fun

^ I agree. Whatever you do, do not rush through. Take your time and route and hide the wires correctly.

yup, still working on the truck, progress is very slow. working my ass off, preparing for another deployment! so its gunna sit for another 9 months. my goal is to crank it up and have it running before i leave again.

the bolt on transmission cover that the shift boot attaches to - is there a gasket for it? how do you find it?

also, power steering lines... i haven't messed with em, any good links or info on LS swap into an '80 steering box? i have read that the hoses from an LS engine will bolt into an 81+ steering box.

You are correct.:thumb: Best of luck on your deployment, stay safe.

i just realized that getting it running before i deploy was my goal before the first deployment! ****!

I hope your not coming to my neck of the woods. Stay safe and kick some Haji as!

ours got pushed right! more time to work! back to work!
hope you are safe mike. i didn't know you were gone.

I mounted my ECM here and like it.

bit of information for the record for anybody doing an LS swap pre-81 --

pre-81 fuel filler neck is 1 and 3/8ths
post-81 fuel filler neck is 1 and 3/4ths.
when you do an LS swap, you need a 91 baffled fuel tank, and the fill nozzle on the tank 1 and 3/4ths

i'm going to be using a jags that run aluminum transition piece to splice my fuel filler neck!

changed the oil, finished the fuel filler neck, put fuel in it, finished the transmission cooler lines, filled the transmission and transfer case with fluid, hooked up the heater hoses temporarily, ran every piece of my painless wiring harness to the general area its supposed to go, hooked the ignition up to my old steering column temporarily, AND FIRED IT UP!!!!

sounds real nice with open headers.

still got a transmission cooler line leak though i gotta fix.

still got a whole bunch of work before its road ready, need some seats... brakes... steering... you know, minor stuff

are you back home yet mike?

Yup, sure am. They put me in a sweet (not really, lol) desk job...S3 NCOIC. Looks like a year at home....more time for the K5 and wheeling!

that sucks man. i worked in a 3 shop for a bit while i was waiting to start my platoon sergeant time. i got a new phone, i don't have your phone number anymore. i am out of here very soon myself, we just did the casing ceremony. if you wanna grab a beer and hear it run before i leave lemme know.

hey, does anybody know whats the proper order for reassembling the interior guts of a door? i took mine apart too long ago. i have all the handle parts coming, but not window guts. Can I reassemble all the handle parts and then put in the windows later?
Or do windows need to go in before handle parts?
thanks

Handle parts last. You can assemble the latch, and outside handle before the window stuff goes in, but the interior handle stuff has to go last.
