Hey, I've got a question for anyone who has rebuilt an axle before. I took apart my Dana 44 front axle, put new knuckles, replaced the diff cover, diff seal, and internal axle seals. However, I didn't replace the axle shafts. I've got a vicious axle leak out both sides now. Are the seals very easy to damage during installation? Or are my old axle shafts not sealing with new axle seals? If I take it all back apart, should i replace my axle shafts?

1) Transmission leak
2) Front and rear axle leaks
3) Driveline vibration
4) Dry rotted tires --- replaced tires
5) No windows passenger/driver
6) No front drive shaft
7) Hood struts won't hold up the hood -- got the correct hood struts for a steel hood
8) Needs AC charged
9) No side mirrors
10) Needs alignment

Thanks

I've never had to replace my axle shafts to fix a leak. Unless they are super pitted around the seal area, I'd think the problem was elsewhere.

Did you install the seals backwards? Or maybe you pushed some dirt from the tubes into the seals sliding the shafts in?

Got a driveline vibration above 40 miles an hour. I have a double cardan CV shaft. I believe the issue is at the axle. I measured my angles and have found a 4 degree difference between drive shaft and axle. Question is-- how much do I need to shim? Do I shim 4 degrees and put the axle in line with the drive shaft, or will it pitch 2 degrees while under power? A few factors for consideration - i have a wraptor, although its not complete. I read that most axles pitch between 1 to 2 degrees, I'm assuming that is without a wraptor?
Thanks for the help

Build is looking pretty good! Any updates? Did you fix your front axle leak and vibration?

On a rear could cardan shaft the pinion should put right at the back of the transfer case for the rear.

I was at Campbell back in 05, Bco and HHC 1/327th1SG retired in Dec 09. Good times.

I bought this truck about a year ago and am finishing up loose ends and redoing the body and paint work. Going to look much different when it's finished up!! This build was done very well and I am lucky to have gotten this truck. I can post progress pics if there's an interest!!
