83 Jimmy build, what to do first?

I'll be sure to throw that kit together before I go out! And I am looking for some 33's, I just don't know where to buy them. Should I expect to pay $1500+? And would I have to swap wheels later when I get different axles? I thought I saw someone say I would need to get axles that I guess have a different bolt pattern?

1/2 ton axles have 6 lugs. 1tons have 8 lugs. So yes. Local tire shops should run 1000 -1100 for tires online a little less. Tire rack and discount tire are my favs, but bought my last set online from wsally world. 285/75/16 where 850. You have time shop around. You can craigslist for deals on used but I don't like used tires, so I buy new for warranty and reliability.

I will tell you a couple of brands I have had good luck with. But sometimes region, terrain, and driving style come into play. I am in Montana so a lot of snow and ice, gravel roads, rocks and mud during spring breakup. Hankook good but wear fast, cooper stt and toyo but spendy, really like kumhos but not super aggressive ( run them on wife's suburban) excellent in snow and ice. Right now I put general at2 on because I have started to travel a lot for work and needed more of a road tire. BFG's are awesome but top of the money. I would run the km2 in a heart beat but will get you closer to 1500.

Best advice, look at peoples tire in parking lots and see what they run on there rigs. Talk to locals who off road around you and get their opinion. Like I said different region different needs.

I'm planning on going rabbit hunting with some friends and I was wondering what would be the best way to take some extra fuel?

How far out in the boonies are you going? Just fill your tank full and watch the fuel gauge.

Martin

Keep in mind I tow a lot. Job trailer, flatbed trailer, boat, rv trailer. I probably tow 2-3 days a week on average. Research tires and think about what you do. Average out what roads and terrain you are on and go from there. I know you keep asking questions to this stuff and hope for a magic bullet answer but we all have different rigs as you can see from build threads and have built what we like and more important what we need.

It just takes time. Kinda like girlfriends, they all have the same basic parts we want, but everyone of them is different.

Used tires work fine. Let someone else take the hit.

Martin

Yes used tires work fine, I am just on the road to much and prefer the warranty. When I was younger I ran used tires all the time, and I would buy another set if I was looking fort tires over 37" tall in a heart beat. But I don't have a purpose built rig and all my rigs can be considered DD and see street trail and highway driving.

You have to do what's best for your needs. Now go drive the tires off of it and figure out what your needs are.

So I'll probably look for used 33's then. They wouldn't look funny with a 4 inch lift right? And Martin my fuel gauge...is weird..

4" and 33s looks good. A bit much wheel opening space (80s style with white shocks, as many as you can fit under there apparantly, and pink shock boots on all of them).

33s look better on stock suspension....

35s on 8 lugs and 4" for the win.

That's why I mentioned 33's no need for lift yet and with a more aggressive tire will open up new trail possibilities for him. Then as he works toward cash for a lift he can do it and still run the33's till he moves up. Baby steps in the correct order do not have you throwing cash after cash just to keep it rolling. Object is to keep it rolling while you save and spend your cash, and still go camping, hunting dunes rather than have your rig down and missing out ona trip, or having to ride with someone else.

Just how I learned to approach it. End of the day it is your toy, do as you wish. Not my fault if it doesn't run when the zombies come.:haha:

Il get 33's when I get the chance until the truck mechanically good! Then when I get the cash I'll get a four inch lift with some 35's.

Under the axle. The other place is under the frame, but you will have a hard time getting the axle off the ground when the springs start drooping. Do you have a floor jack, or is that bottle jack your only option?

Martin

All I have is the bottle jack. But my dad might have a floor jack at his shop. Wish I would've grabbed a floor jack instead.

Well good news! I go the jimmy back an it turns out she has a 350! The mechanic checked and let me know. Hell ya! :D

Well she's still dying. Damn it's so frustrating. New carb and tune up and it still does the same thing. Any ideas?

Take it back to the mech that you just paid to fix this problem and tell him it's still doing the same thing.

Or, take a vid of what's going on. Post it on youtube, link it here so we can see. Short of being right there with the truck this is the next best thing.
