83 Jimmy build, what to do first?

have you replaced the fuel filter yet? I seem to remember reading that you hadn't. that would fall under the category of basic wrench spinning in the earliest posts on here.

A restricted fuel filter may supply enough fuel to run at idle, but will choke off the engine when running at higher speeds with higher fuel demands.

its also an easy and cheap fix.

Thats a great spot to start. Very cheap easy thing to try

How do I go about changing a fuel filter? And pics may have to wait until Saturday unless you don't mind flash light pics(which I don't mind provifing). Also I plan on changing gear oil today so I'll post pictures of my gears if I end up doing it!

Ive never owned a gasoline blazer, but if its at all like other GM vehicles, the filter is an inline unit, with fittings at either end. use two box wrenches. one holds the filter in place, the other loosens the fuel line fitting. if memory serves its a 3/4in and 5/8in wrench. loosen both fittings, remove filter. put new filter in its place (making sure its facing the right way), hand thread the fittings on either end. then snug down tight with the wrenches.

Well I didn't get around to gears but I think I found the problem!

Filter seems to have some leakage around it

That's fuel leaking

That's the fuel puddle it looks black but its just gas and poor photo quality.

When I got home I looked under my jimmy and there was a fairly large fuel puddle that seemed to come from the filter area but idk where it's leaking from!

If the leak is by the filter than i say yes. A leak will most likely develope at a fitting of some kind. The filter will prolly cost $5. Just do it

I have a fuel filter I bought one today by chance haha. How do I keep myself from getting covered in fuel when I take it off? This weekend I'm going to change my gear oil(front and back right?) and replace that fuel filter and post a lot of pics! I feel like I need to throw some pics in here, after all its a build thread!

If ut starts funneling out gas.... Plug it witg your finger or shove something in it till you put the filter on. Its just gas anyway :waytogo:

Uhm. It could be the angle of pic but does that exaust pipe look rather close to anyone else? Fuel leak,(sucking air at speed) hot exaust and close proximity, may be causing more than one problem for drivability. And how did a pro shop not catch that?

I'll get some pics up haha. When I look at build threads i just feel so lost! Well one thing i need to fix is my steering, the steering wheel is really unaligned. How do I fix that?

Thats a very vague question. could be lots of things.. Could need an allignment. Tie rods vould be shot, someone could have put the steering wheel or steering column in weird.... Need more infor dude.

x2.

Replace the fuel filter, get it to not leak. That leak could turn into an air intake under power (suction) and putting air into your fuel lines. Plus being that close to the exhaust could very well cause vapor lock. Start by replacing the fuel filter/fixing the leak. Chances are it will eliminate the vapor lock but only time will tell.

Oh, and you will get gas all over yourself, the truck, your tools, the ground. Gas is the greatest when it runs down your arm and finds its way to your arm pit. And when you get some in your eye, that's even better! I'm gonna go drip some gas in my eye right now just to relive that sensation again....

And what shop does a tune up and doesn't replace the fuel filter? Also brings the question, why did they replace the carb and not rebuild it? I would be hesitant to go back to that shop again. They may be a decent shop for newer cars where you just pull a diagnostic code and replace a part but these old trucks and their carbs are a different animal than anything on the road these days. Diagnosing these old beasts is becoming more of a lost art than anything else.

Ahh gas in the armpit. Almost as bad as gas down your butt crack, or on your ballz....

Chances are a shop didn't get much past getting your carb to idle well. You can't just put a new carb on and poof your car runs right at all speeds. I have little changes I make to my carb every couple weeks. It's been a couple year process now to get it running how I want, but you should be able to get it to run reasonably well with a little bit of know how.

Did you mention what carb brand and model you got? Your going to want to pick up a book on that specific model. Someone on here can probably recommend a decent one. They did for me and it's made a world of difference. I learned a bunch of tricks about my carb I never knew existed. One my my friends describes carbs as little computers that run on air. At first they are very complicated, but you will learn.

You also will need to pick up a timing light soon and a dwell meter/tach to see how your truck is actually idling. This will compliment tuning your carb.

Of course this is all after you fix that fuel problem. Is that the only filter on your line? I always run one after the pump too.

It doesn't help but I have to add. Covering your head completely and most your shirt because you're stuck and can't run, while at the junkyard, sucks too.

I'm thinking the float might be too high, fixed that on a 70 Corvette a month back, same symptoms

and x2 on the gas/arm pit love, you gotta try it!

:haha:

Fixed yet? Well then hurry up......

Don't worry some days I move at the speed of smell. Hope all goes well for your first time, and don't listen to them the gas is nice and cool when it runs down your arm.......at first.:D
