'83 k30 Project

Oh, your talking about the metal coupler inside the adapter right?
Idk why I was thinking you meant the adapter itself. I forgot these models have the coupler sleeve in them

yep, they get sloppy and blow apart, seems more common with the manual trans. $80-90 well spent while the t-case is off.

From what I've seen/read it's because of the 10 spline course coupler, allows too much slop I guess.

I'll probably go ahead and replace it and then it's just that much more piece of mind

Not sure yet, it was a chrome aftermarket grill so I'm not sure what color will look best after I get it all buffed Down

Well, not that I just absolutely NEED it but I managed to call dibs on a SRW k30 frame that should match my frame, as well as two front fenders and a hood for free. Supposed to go pick them up on Sunday.
the rear driver side of my frame is somewhat bent/warped but it really isnt affecting much other than the body lines and making the rear bumper lean. I think its plenty fixable without doing a total body/drivetrain swap onto a new frame but decided to snag this anyway. Maybe it will be a good base for a future build

not a bad thing to have around if you have the space. I picked up a spare frame a couple years ago for similar reasons.

Yeah I have a few places I can stash it. I gotta remember I still have a suburban frame and axles that ill eventually be going to pick up also...room might run out fast.

Nice build!

I have dick cepek fun country 2s on my rig. I like how they are on road, and off road. Once i go up to 35s i will probably get something a little more aggresive. But i really do like how they are on the road compared to more aggresive ones.

Excited to keep up with this build:popcorn:

Like where this is going man.

You have the truck I'd like to find, 3/4 ton 4x4 4spd Silverado.

No Immediate progress at the moment.
Figured Id bump this and get some feedback on the build.

I always like to somewhat have a direction or a purpose on a build and up until now I really didn't have one for this truck. Besides tinkering with chevy/gm trucks my other hobby has always been hunting or fishing. Fishing wise I used to spend a ton of time down the beaches here and weekend to four day long camping trips on the surf fishing and just enjoying getting away. Its about the closest thing we have around here to any actual wheeling trips. Loose sand is the only main obstacle and honestly with a little common sense most of the areas here my 2012 half ton with street tires and no lift use to handle it easily and I only had to kick it 4x4 occasionally when the sand was really loose. In January I traded in the 2012 and picked up a newer and much cleaner 2014 Gm. And here lies my dilemma. Do I subject the new truck to the sand and salt and just live with the wear and tear on a truck I make payments on or do I go ahead and start steering the k30 towards being the new beach rig, where as rusty fenders and what not are already there and a bit more wont really hurt, this thing isn't exactly show truck quality so it wont hurt my feelings.

I guess my biggest concern is going to be reliability, the two places I frequent most are about 2hrs of highway driving followed by 20-60 miles of beach, one of them has cell service in and out and the other is probably one of TX's most remote beaches where cell phone signal is almost none existent.

Just curious on anyone's thoughts on this.

6.2 LS and 4L80 swap and drive the square everywhere!! Make it dead on reliable and add AC lol

I personally think a square is just as reliable as a newer truck. If it's cared for properly. Yes things break. But I hear guys talk about how their old truck left em stranded on the side of the road cause there was crap in the fuel tank, or ethanol fuels hurt it, or modern oils didn't lube it well, or whatever. Well checking your fuel filter, making sure your 30 yr old rubber fuel lines weren't cracked, and actually checking the oil probably would have prevented all those things.

Yes older parts not included in preventative maintenance might break more often.

And yes I think an older truck in even decent shape can be very reliable

Appreciate the input guys. I chewed this over a lot yesterday. And I realized that "reliability" was only going to be as good as the attention to details and little things that I put into the truck. I started to warm up to that and felt a bit better but then realized another draw back.

Room... The bed has plenty of room, that was never a concern. But dry storage for bedding and clothes would be real limited inside the cab. It would leave me having to pack everything in totes and fill the bed up like a Tetris puzzle. In the past my trucks were newer crew cabs and I could fit anything that needed to stay dry in the folded up rear seat area and then still had enough room for a passenger.

So now I'm stuck there, I've been eyeballing the Internet looking for a bed shell as one option for the truck.... But I maaaaaaaay have found another option. Going to follow up on it this morning.

time for a square body crew cab?

I like the newer trucks for the ride quality and comfort creature features so I won't take the truck unless I'm planning on wheeling at the destination.
