83k5 Build

Everything looks better without a light rack.

Martin

I usually like the k5's with light racks I don't like regular trucks with em though

Definately looks better

Everyone says it looks better and I just cant decide which I like better. it might be because im used to seeing it with all the stuff on it, im thinking something is missing like in the middle of the grille or something im thinking about putting just the center piece of the brush guard back on so its like a push bar type deal

Where did you get the front guard? I can't find anyone that builds them for the 83 K5?

no idea, it was on the truck when I got it. and theres nothing on it that could indicate who made it or where it came from

So it has been a while since I made an update on the build. its been a crazy few years and haven't been able to do much to it. in that time what little I have done to it just got worse because I wasn't able to follow through with stuff. only thing iv done to it since the last update is put in a freshened up 350 out of a 93 gmc suburban. the 400 sbc I had in it come to find out when I tried to do a cam swap the guy I had line bore the engine block screwed it up and my front cam bearing was just about ready to fall into the crank case. so its a good thing I went to swap cams out or I wouldn't have found it.
now the 400 is sitting in pieces waiting for me to have time for it. a buddy of mine had the burban I got from him for cheap and I didn't have to do much to the engine to have it ready to drop in. so now here it sits iv finally decided its time to start back up on her. so hopefully there will be much more updates to this.

today I was just able to get the old fender flares off to take a look at the fenders and the back are pretty bad. but I plan on starting with the right side fender flare. I ordered it from LMC and its on its way as soon as I get it and a warmish day im gonna start cutting stuff.

okay well the rocker panel I ordered showed up pretty quick. I'm always impressed with how fast LMC gets things to ya. tomorrow, weather permitting I'm going to start on this project. never been very good at body work so we'll see how she goes.

well started the tear down today. have a couple questions. most of you guys do these builds outside. well what do you do about the weather like when it rains or something? or does it matter?
also I'm debating whether or not to pull the body off so I can make it right, well when or if I do, do I need to weld in supports to make sure it doesn't flex or bend at all?

started with getting the door off.
and then started on the front end

Pretty typically the half cab trucks don't need any bracing. I have had several off and they seem pretty stable and rigid

okay, because I haven't seen anyone on here brace the body before they lifted it off. iv had a couple friends tell me I should though but idk. idk if il even take it off or not yet.

Well iv gotten a bit more done today, spent a few hours on it. I started getting the hood and right front fender off. everything was really rusted and nasty so it took me a while to move forward a little.
The hood came off easy enough, iv taken it off a few times before anyway.

the truck has sat for a while since I put this newer motor in and I let it warm up a little before I moved it to this position and I noticed some antifreeze leaking. well come to find out one of the freeze plugs popped out. I didn't think it got that hot. im not sure what would have caused this but itl have to be fixed later.

that bolt was rusted up completely and it just started spinning inside the fender so no matter what I did I couldn't get it out the easy way

finally got the inner fender out as well. wrapped the engine in plastic and called it a day, sunday il try and get driver door off, driver seat out, and the front left fender off. hopefully the core support as well. then I can start clean up and ripping the dash and wiring out.

well I got the front end finished taken down. gonna start taking out the dash and wiring sunday. its goin slow. I get off work through the week when its dark so I don't have then to work on it. plus I have school 4 days a week, so for now Wednesday and Sunday are the only times I can mess with it till summer.

Pull the windshield out and see what the actual condition of the frame is.

Martin

that's what I figured id have to do. should prolly replace most the glass anyways. its really scratched up

Glad to see progress on this again!! looking good:thumb:

p.s that engine looks sexy.. can't wait to get to the point, of an engine swap

Thanks, I think so too. I think this one looks much better than the first one I built.
