Should replace that torque converter with a clutch! Then you don't have to worry about loose bolts.

Martin

I expected that from someone :rotfl:

I like the slush box on the trail.

Looking good I was thinking it need a TC with 6 bolts

I thought about that however the wrong bolts lasted 7 years so I should be ok with the correct flange bolts with loctite.

weekend update......

  • Installed a "T" on the back of the intake manifold for the booster and TH400 vacuum source. It's 3/8 NPT for future reference.
  • removed the V-belt power steering pulley and installed the serp pulley on the PSC pump.
  • Installed the accessory bracket, PS pump, alternator, idler pulley and serp belt.
  • I found out my powermaster starter won't work on this block so I picked up a Napa gold and installed that. Lost a damn starter bolt along the way so I had to track one of those down too. Wiring is hooked up too.
  • Installed the exhaust manifolds after sourcing shorter flange bolts. (I needed 25mm rather than the 30mm I purchased a couple weeks back)
  • Installed the Moroso torque converter bolts with red loctite.
  • Then I found the TH400 HD bellhousing won't fit around the 8.1L pan. I need to trim that to fit apparently....
  • Welded the O2 bung on the passenger exhaust pipe so I have an O2 on both banks.
  • Wrapped the exhaust with header wrap.
  • Installed both O2 sensors with the smaller version on the drivers side. I don't think it was needed with the manifolds however.......
  • Removed the shift cable, damn thing is cooked from the exhaust wrap coming off. I'm partially through the installation of this cable.
  • Installed a replacement coil that I broke during the install however I found less than adequate clearance to the booster. On the trail it would have been a problem for sure so I built a bracket moving the coil forward and away from the booster.
Pics because everyone loves pics!

and I finally pulled the trigger and picked up a trailer. I'm the only one in my wheeling group to drive to and from the trail and it's been wearing on me.

It's a 2022 model, 8.5' wide X 18' deck (drive over fenders), 7K axles and a hitch receiver for a winch. I went and bought a winch cradle and a winch and loaded the truck on top so I can store both on the side of the house. It's actually easier to work on the trailer deck anyway.

Pretty slick move on the coil. Larry ran into the same issue on his Burb when he put the 8.1 in it. Though his solution was moving to hydroboost as it was in his plans anyway.

I swapped to hydroboost prior to my 8.1 install for the same reasons. I did want to change and it was easier to do with the engine out and changing the pedals out for the coming 5-speed swap at the same time.

Great progress.

I was searching the 8.1 build threads for other ideas to consider and I quickly realized they all had hydroboost. Same situation for the bell housing issue with the TH400, you guys all run manuals :rotfl:

Thanks.

Is that intake manifold cast using a lost foam casting? Has a strange Styrofoam texture.

and nice trailer!

I had to trim the lip off my torque converter cover also, for the dame reason

Not sure, but it doesn’t look that unusual in person.

Thanks!

I just ran across the photo you posted and saved a copy. Thanks for confirming. Do you have the coil clearance issue too?

Yeah, it’s not as common to go to the TH400 with an 8.1. Off the top of my head the only other auto/8.1 combo I remember around here was speedlabdan’s crew cab with the 8.1/Allison combo. Which might as well be as different as it could be from a 400 too so it’s not much help for you.

For your setup on a more dedicated trail rig I see the combo working really well. Should be point and shoot on the trail. I’m excited to see how it does.

Should run well and be reliable which is something I was lacking last summer with the old peanut port 454 and throttle body injection. My concerns have now shifted to breaking drive train components.....

no, all mine seem to fit right where they are.

Do you have a body lift? I'm running 1" pucks and without them, the coil would be hitting the booster.

There also might be a slight difference in tub between the 73 and 84, or difference between the motor mount heights between you and him

Maybe the cab, I run a 70's frame. Or the boosters are slightly different.
