'84 K5 Build (Midlife Crisis)

First disclaimer... not a lot of experience with a magnum {at least this type of magnum}..........:pimp:

That 465 never did anything to me but can you slide it back together, remove the adapter to trans bolts and CUT the main shaft with a demo saw or something? Then could you slide the adapter off and address the issue first hand?
Is a 32 spline output 465 more valuable then maybe breaking the adapter? In squares they are rare but they are kinda common in 88-91 GMT 400 series trucks.
If it comes to cutting, I believe the adapter will be the sacrifice.

Oh yeah. We spent an hour wiggling and prying. I’m thinking the nose of the female spline magnum input bottomed out against the 465 mainshaft nut and boogered it up. It’s the only thing I can think possible.
That is my guess too if it's still not coming off but can slide back in.
It's mushroomed

That’s the only thing I can think of. I just can’t figure out how it happened. Everything seemed to go together fine when I installed it a few years ago:dunno:

I hurt my pinky but she’s apart!

Looks like the damn trans output shaft was a hair too long and friction welded to the grease cap in the planetary input.

Was able to get both hydro rams rigged up
In a way to get good even pressure.
Sum bish popped and I smashed my pinky in the pump handle lol. I don’t know how I missed this interference going together. Must have just been touching. I’ll have to take the Magnum apart to see what needs replaced even though it was working fine. Just glad it’s apart!

Glad it’s apart with minimal damage ( finger smash aside..) !

Question: is that adapter a NOVAK item ?
I’ve been doing some research on mating a MAGNUM up to a 465 with the shortest adapter possible and am wondering if you are using the same stuff that I have been looking at ?

No, it’s advance adapters shorty sm465 mainshaft and adapter. It’s super short.
But appears I needed to trim a 1/8” off the shaft!

Well, it’s not minimal damage like I thought. I may have myself a very expensive repair on my hands. :1zhelp:
I (think) I can clean up the shaft and be ok.
Gonna need a new pocket bearing. Miraculously, the bearing didn’t come apart until I separated them forcibly. No pieces ran through any of the planetary.
Man o Man….

Double ouch! Holy cow dude. That's getting rough to break out the dueling porta-powers to break stuff free. Glad you got it though.
Yeah no doubt! I have to look at it that I’m lucky I pulled this when I did. Probably would have gone full fubar on the next wheeling trip. Luckily both those shafts spin together when in high range.

That escalated quickly. Bummer about the expanded project. Is it just bearings and other service parts, or is there more extensive damage?

Pulled the old bell housing and clutch today. Also measured and cut the new shifter hole in the tunnel, being it is 3.5” more rearward than the stock one.
Also drilled and tapped another 1/4” npt hole directly in the bottom of the magnum so I can change fluid easily.

I guess the lesson learned from this one is always check input shaft clearance with plistigauge or silly puddy depending on the clearances expected...even if everything goes together smoothly without it. I bet that thing did not give any resistance until the last couple of threads. If resistance happens 1/2 or 3/4 way in then it is easy to tell something is not right, but if it the last couple of threads then it is impossible.
