'85 C30 now a K20 - Grandpa's Truck

Crazy! Good to know! That is a pretty awesome color. Good choice! THanks alot for the detailed response also.

Mills that 72 paint code is Apple Red....my 85 was Apple red with Quicksilver (17) top and bottom.....looked great I thought.

My 86 is (72) apple red. That is the color on the window sticker.
Your truck looks great, good job on the paint job.

My date to homecomings mom, I'm pretty sure got some good pictures of the truck in the sun, I'll post'em when i get'em. Along with a picture of the make up sticker on the can of paint.

Be sure to get a photo of Grandma's reaction to it....

That's a great part of this story too.

a fairly cheap fix for your chevy hub caps is have your sticker maker do some to fit. At first I thought black back ground with red GMC letters but ill bet they can come close to your body color back ground and do black GMC letters then match with black GMC letters for your tailgate

Very nice work I love to see close to original trucks just clean and simple like that

original balzer : I might have to talk to him on the sticker idea for the hub caps .

Thanks Sean.

And i promise i'll get them pics up soon.

Winter Storage

Well, no pictures..:doah:

On the other hand, that sad day of putting this thing away for the winter is getting pretty darn close. Its getting stored in my Grandparents relatively new barn that is sealed up good. Still probably going to get a cover for it though.

Any opinions on putting it on blocks under the frame for the winter? Maybe not necessary? Our 73' Vette would sit over winter and get some bad flat spots in the tires that would eventually come out after driving it a while...

Also thinking about giving some things that weren't painted a shot of WD-40?

We use moth balls under the hood of our snowmobiles for summer storage. Any thing work that good without the smell?

Any storage other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

Throw cedar chip smelling mothballs and/or drier sheets in it. Drive around with the windows open for a while after. That's what I always did/do.

If you have a military surplus store they sometimes have a can that sucks up moisture. Bias tires get flat spots but usually radials wont so much put some sort pf protectant on the tires and all your rubber door seals and window gaskets. wd 40 on exposed metal is a fairly good plan I used to use it on chrome wheels for the winter. I wouldnt put a cover on it, just a heavy wax job.

Sta-Bil in the fuel tank
Extra air in the tires to prevent flatspotting
Plug the exhaust and intake with rags to keep mice out
Open a box of Decon (mouse poison) and put it somewhere in the engine bay
Dessicant pouches for the interior if you're worried about moisture
Pull the battery cable to prevent slow drain

That's about all I'd do....probably less depending on how "complete" the truck is at this point.

Well i finally got her put away for the winter. It's going to be a LONG winter. Already have a list of thing to be done when she comes out of hibernation.

Well the trucks been parked in my Grandmas garage for the winter and last time i was there i noticed a puddle of anti-freeze under it. Didn't have time to check it out but its on my to do list. Ordering my new battery trays soon and when i go to put them in, I'm going to check out that leak. My goal is to work on it in her garage and have it ready to drive once the roads clear up. Untill then i get to sit her and look at a picture of the truck and think about driving it. I want to drive it as much as i can this year because i move to Indianapolis for college in July, I'm attending Lincoln Tech there and will only make the drive home every once in a while.

Well, change in plans for schooling that is. Found a somewhat local college that has a General Motors A.S.E.P. program so I'm trying to locate a dealer to sponsor cause in this program you work for three months then go to school for three months and you need a GM dealer to work at.

Anyway, still haven't had the money to order my battery trays. Hoping i will soon though. Looks to be the water pump gasket that is leaking. Not leaking terrible but its leaking. Going to get it home, snug the bolts and see if that helps. If it doesn't its getting a water pump and prolly a new timing chain. O and i still got to put up a pic of the paint can mixture sticker as i promised.

That would be a great investment in your future Mills.
good luck with the repairs!

ok guys, its been a while. ive been busy driving the truck :thumb:. i get compliments all the time and i have to smile every time i walk out to a parking lot and see it sitting there lol. after some thinking i am almost positive i want to swap motors, im thinking gas. i know whats involved in the swap and my uncles have done it before. i want to go big block being that its a 3500 but my one uncle has a friend with a known good fresh (run on engine stand, never in vehicle) 355, its been balanced, forged pistons, aluminum intake and an rv style cam for 800 bucks.. not sure what year the block is or what the heads are yet but i plan on trying to have the guy get me the numbers. im not looking for an all that fast truck but i am a kid and i like to have some get up and go and be able to lay some rubber when i want to. the engine will be mated to my 400 and the truck has a 14 ff with 4.10s. im just curious on your guys' opinion on if i should pass on the 355 or try to find a big block and go from there? the 355 is definitely the cheaper route..

If the engine is what they say its a good deal Id say, but alot of people have different definitions of rebuilt.
