'85 Subruban K20 Build Thread

One inch huh? Guess I will order ORD's HD shackle. I think it comes in an inch over stock.

I have the old trans and tc out. I don't have any pictures yet. I hate dealing with transmissions. No matter how careful I am I get trans fluid everywhere.

I have to go pick up a trans jack in the morning. I didn't mine dropping the old out with a floor jack but don't have any help to put the new one in and don't want to take a chance of dropping it.

Preliminary measurements show I will gain 5+ inches in driveshaft length due to the 205 being fixed out put. So if I ever need a doubler I should have plenty of room.

I'm ready to get this project over and drive some.

I say one inch if you want to play with gas tank level, and thats with a 40 gal. tank, and that depends on the springs.:haha:
I have a scar from stiches on my left forearm, from the trans slipping off a trans jack at ~5 inches elevation.

Well lets hope it goes in as easily as the 700 came out.

As previously stated I got the old trans and transfercase out. In putting on the torque converter on the 4l80e I noticed how big the input shaft was as compared to the 700r4. The two pictures aren't very good but the 700 input is smaller than a quarter and the 4l80 is bigger than. I was really surprised at the size difference, can only imagine the inside components.

I got the new trans in and the 205 mounted. The exhaust runs too close to the right side of the case. By the time it is over my new exhaust will have to be replaced.

In measureing, I am going to have to have 61 inches of rear drive shaft. That is a LOOOOONNNNNGGG shaft. That is 8 inches longer than with the 700r4 and 208. The difference came in with the fixed output of the 205 as compared to the slip yoke of the 208. Maybe a doubler in the future?

If you see a newer Crew Cab, long bed, you might take a look at how that Drive shaft was done. Some of the ones I've seen on lifted trucks, are huge.:eek1:

Well, the 4l80e is in and wired up with the Compushift controller. I drove it through the field for a moment to about 20 mph I guess. Felt good. Still have a few things to button up before a road test.

I can tell you this, that trans shifted so smoothly I didn't even know it changed gears. Can't wait for a road test. Maybe this evening.

No updates really. I have been extremely busy with work and so projects have been put on the back burner.

Right now, I need to revisit the pinion angle, have an alignment done and put on new tires. The burb is getting very little use till those issues are addressed.

The trans seems to be awesome. It is a shame I can drive it more. I hope to have these issues worked out within the next week then I can drive it more.

I did haul off some scrap to the crusher a couple weeks ago. Between the 454 4l80 and 4.10 gears the 8k lbs seemed like nothing.

I will be running a 285/75/16 E BFG AT. That equates to 33x11 I think.

I wanted an E for support and towing. They will be on the Classic Mickey Thompson Aluminum Wheels.

Currently I am using the stock '85 burb shifter w/ the stock linkage. I don't really care for it. The throw is very short and makes it tough to make sure which gear the TC is in.

Well, it's been a while since I have done much to the burb.

The burb is level while sitting on level ground but anything else it looks front high. I ordered a set of ORD heavy duty shackles which are 1/2" longer than stock. Hope this will correct the issue.

Come Monday it's going in the shop to have the old spring perches cut off and new ones welded to correct the pinion angle with out using wedges.

This should pretty much finish up the drivetrain. From there I can enjoy it for a while and then maybe start on the body.

It's back from the shop. They cut off the spring perches and rotated the axle so I could get rid of the shim, though they rotated it to far down and needs to come back up some. That will happen this week. They also replaced the front pinion seal and installed my ORD heavy duty shackles.

While it doesn't look like it in the photo below, the ass is still about a 1/4" lower than the front. I am ordering 1" Zero rates tomorrow so that when the axle gets rotated again I will be 3/4" high in the rear, less of course the zero rates can be shaved some, maybe end up 1/2" high.

As you can see the new wheels and tires are on.

Good to see you haven't lost interest in it. Keep posting updates, your 'burb keeps me motivated to work on my own!
