'86 K30 Crew Cab Build

I'm pretty sure this is a good reason to do like an 8.1 or Cummins or something. Just make the engine louder most noises magically cure themselves. Right? I mean that's how it works right???????
Yep, I can't hear shit in my ford with a 12 valve(the phone, kids in the back seat, nothing). Doesn't help that my shift boot is pretty much MIA. I'd love to gut it and do some sound proofing.

My truck is running great! The new trans is behaving perfectly. The throw out bearing is still making a wee bit of noise, only when the clutch is engaged, it has mellowed out a bunch with the miles I have put on the truck (maybe 150 since the swap now). I think I can safely declare success. The OD is sweet, feels like a whole new truck, very very happy with this mod. I’m still waiting for the new clutch master and slave cylinder to get here, hoping that improves the function a little bit more.

I got my winch wired up today, took zero pictures. I am happy to report that after the clearancing I did to the radiator support I can pull the winch without removing the whole bumper. I relocated the control box to the radiator support passenger side. I had to build new cables for everything to put it there, but it is in a good out of the way and protected spot. I also relocated the control socket to a spot high up on the radiator support. I’m planning to add some hard wired in cab controls eventually. I do have a HF remote, so i’m less concerned about that.

Before I installed it, I tore the winch completely down and sealed it up and packed the planetaries with waterproof grease. I still haven’t put the cable back on it, but now I can since it is fully functional. Maybe get that done tomorrow.

Haven’t had much to add to this thread, just been using it for truck stuff and a few adventures up in the mountains around here. Happy to report the NV4500 is working flawlessly. I have logged 1500 miles or so with the new trans and it is all good.

The biggest surprise has been how great it is to have 2wd low range, courtesy of the ORD twin stick shifter i put in. The low range gearing is just all around better for poking around on the trails I run with this truck. It is really nice to be able to leave the hubs locked but not have to be in 4wd to use low range. Engaging/disengaging the front axle is super easy when needed, driving around with the hubs locked.

I think that mod was just as life changing as having the OD gear. I wish i’d done that years ago.

Here’s a pic just because from the end of a nice little trail a few miles from my house.

Next up is the rear suspension and Bilstein shocks all the way around.

Love the stance of your crew cab...if mine wasn't mainly a tow rig, that's the stance I would do to mine :waytogo:

New clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder went in last night. Clutch is totally silent now.

@Kay86K5

Oh, and I have boiled down my little tick I was tracking down to a simple little header/exhaust leak...something I'll get fixed later on.

Also, my sister is moving to Pocatello this weekend...so I'll probably be around your part of the state more often as time goes by. Next time we come down that way, I'll let you know and we can try to meet up. I think our crew cab's need to meet, haha

Glad you found a non threatening source for that noise. Let me know when you’ll be around, I’d love to see your crewcab in person.

2wd lo range has been something I've been looking forward to also.

You are going to love it. Your setup with 4 tcase gear ranges is probably as close to perfect as can be had. Did you mod your shift rails to get front wheel drive only too?

Twin sticking my suburban was life changing for it. It really helps with the turning radius of these units.

Edit. And also for me, I am too lazy to unlock hubs. It's perfect for super sharp turns being able to unlock an certain axle at a certain time. Welded diff and all it's made it through some super tight trails and only lost the windows.

Interesting data point. I hauled a load of tree branches to the landfill today and got the weight for my empty truck when I left.

6270 lbs (empty with no people)

The truck specs are 350/NV4500/NP205 D60/14BFF (single wheel), 250 lbs of fabricated bumpers, 12K winch with steel cable. 16.5” aluminum wheels and 37” MTR military tires (and a matching spare), 10ish gallons of fuel onboard, and a hi-lift jack. The factory seats and sheet metal is mostly all there (it’s dented and beat but intact) minus a little fender trimming. It has no carpet or other floor covering at present either.

That’s quite a bit lighter than I would’ve figured it! My regular cab 2500HD/Duramax weighs over 8,000lbs

That's perfect timing lol... I'm going out to pick one up like yours but all stock and have been pondering over what it will weigh. Now I know, +/- 100# or so :thumb:

I’ve eyeballed that cc at Eric’s a few times, It is good project starter for sure.
