86 K30 - Sarge - strong box doubler and triple stick shifter

So as if I need another project here I am again :doah: :D

Back story of how I got here ;
I sold my 00 Cummins that was my DD, work, towrig, plow , do it all truck and bought a 2011 Cummins :woot: , which I love, however, I have become spoiled from having the plow when it snows. I dont plow comercially, just my house and a few others (mostly family). I looked into putting it on the new ride, but at just under $1000 for the mount, and the possibility of sliding the brand new crew cab into a bush or something stupid I decided against it. So I thought to myself........"I bet I could find a K5 for a lot less then the price of a mount, and put my plow on it ".................. then I came across a 88K5, with an older Meyer 7.5' plow rig a TBI 350, 465 trans, 208 and a blown 10 bolt rear, for less then the price of the new mount :D I went and looked at it, it ran, the plow worked, and it even had one of the old "SKYLER" style soft tops that came with it. So I gave a deposit with plans to pick it up on Sat (this was on a thursday), I got home and listed MY plow setup on CL that night. I ended up selling my rig the next day for almost TWICE what I bought the K5 for :woot:.

So here is the new K5 , it will be used to push some snow in the winter and camping and wheeling in the summer. It will not be a resto build, or a pretty truck. Dents and scratches are fine, and cheap will be the goal when modding. It will get lifted, fenders will be cut to fit when I find tires, and the 10 bolts will need to go .

this was when I looked at it

I have no idea what is supposed to be painted on the blade :dunno:

the old "Dented Dodge" , was a great truck, 332,000 miles :bow::bow: (already had taken the plow mount off)

and what was on the trailer , that I found at a local auto wrecker.............:D:D:D

couldnt believe my eyes when I spotted a miltary truck in a bone yard with the front axle still there :eek1:, and when the guy told me $250 , and they would even remove it, well............sold :D

So thats where this adventure begins, I have a line on a 14...

Dang, some guys have all the luck :D

How rusty is it? Doesn't look all that bad from the pics.

I shouldn't say, but, it's actually better....  I bought an 01 Ram 2500 gasser a while back as a parts truck and because it had the plow on it. By the time I was done parting it, I ended up "into" the plow for $0 , and got a dash for my old diesel and a bed and some other body parts , which I then ended up selling with the truck recently. So......the plow was free :D or it cost negative , or something like that :D

As far as rust, ya, it's got a decent amount, some half a** patching on the floors, but, overall it's not bad, especially considering it had a plow on it. The cab supports are all solid and the tail pan is pretty good, where the floor meets the tail pan it's got some holes but the tail is solid. Plus the rear window actually works and the the doors and tailgate shut nicely.
It is a roll up window , rubber floor truck so thats even better for my purposes.

Small update, in sticking with the budget plan, I am going to go the 52/56 swap route for suspension. One of the local parts yards sells spring packs for $13 , so $26 gets me a set of springs :woot:. I stopped at one on my way home today and found a clean 1/2 ton sub, with the rear already pulled so I'm going back tomorrow or Friday for the 52's :D.

I've got a set of 56s with brand new bushings pressed in, I'll want a bit more than 26 bucks but i'm sure we can work something out, give me a shout- 443twoeight6threezerosix3 :thumb:

I'll give you a shout later tonight, I'm now nervous / curious :dunno: :D. This weekend was a bust , too much going on, and me catching the nasty cold/flu that Jacob brought home didn't help :doah:so no updates.

Soooo.......sort of an update  , the K5 is gone :haha:.

I found a 14ff on CL, went to look at it, got to talking to the guy after I had already bought it and he tells me about this "old truck" he has and is thinking about selling too. He asks if I want to take a look at it , of course I say yes. Turns out to be a 1986 K30, 454/400/205, no bed (had a flat bed), but otherwise completely un-modified and under 100k on it.
Well long story short, I sold the K5 minus the plow for a $100 less then I had in it and bought the K30, so the swap cost me about $250 total, and now I have an extra 60/14 combo that I will sell, as well as the Skyler soft top from the K5, so I'll come out pretty good on the deal :D :D.

Plans are still the same for the truck. I need to have this thing useable before June 10, so there will be progress soon.

The 60 to 76543 ?

Just sayin......:haha:

That would be expensive :eek1:.

It's crazy, I looked for years ,literally, and could never find a decent deal on a 60. Then I found the one I have in my K5, then my junkyard find, now my whole K30 and a few weeks ago I scored a Dodge 60/70hd combo, both locked from a 93 cummins truck for $500 (they were for my brother). I'm on a Dana 60 hot streak :D

Not only would it be expensive, but pretty desperate on my part (Which isn't the case).

It's amazing whats actually readily available from state to sate, north to south to east to west.

I've only seen about 4 Jimmy/Blazer trucks in my local yards in the longest time, and any 60's that roll in roll right back out long before I get there. There's always a line of....I wont say aliens, but.... sitting outside the yards, waiting for the next load so they can pull a running EFI engine for 500 and turn it into 2k. Same with all the other mainstream components. It's actually their job.

When the time comes for my 60, I'll just roll the lot with a green and white and watch those guys scatter. :haha:

No offense to anyone if misinterpreted. :pimp:

Oh man i forgot what thread this was and was thinkin u got rid of the other k5 lol. Pheww :D

I am collecting quite a few parts currently :D , but I thought I would at least post up a pic of the new rig.

k30.jpg

1986 K30 454 /400 trans / NP205 D60/14FF 3.73's , completly stock, and runs like a champ :woot:.
Im doing a 52 swap on the front, flip in the back, 0 rates, swapping rears for my 60/14 w/ 4.56's , cutting it down to SWB length, and looking to run something in the 38-40" range. Oh and a ORD inspired tube bed with removable seats.

More updates soon, I WILL have this thing wheel-able for the Rausch Creek trip in June :pimp:
