86 K30 - Sarge - strong box doubler and triple stick shifter

all that practice made swapping in my new shaft a breeze:waytogo:

I hope so, I can't imagine the conditions were worse the being off the side of lower talisman :haha:

I was thinking earlier, how it will be so nice this trip, Sarge is all ready, fluids checked, nuts and bolts tightened, put some new plug wires on today that are correct for the new distributor.......just need to load up tools and parts and put it on the trailer................

then I remembered..............

I still have 2 other rigs to make sure are ready for the weekend too :doah::haha: but it's only Monday so I'm ahead of schedule

Correct me if im wrong but a few pages back to me it looks like the EGR is hooked directly up to the TBI port, basically missing the EGR thingy. Will that setup function correctly?

Theres no way I can make this trip. I'm already swamped with work and some reason I volunteered for the Tow Truck Show this weekend...

That pic was during install, the hose was just laying under another one, the ECM is setup for no EGR, everything is plugged or removed now, so all is good.

One of these days I'll get to see that cummins on the trail :D

So all week I've been helping jeep guys get ready for this trip :doah: all the time thinking all I had to do was load up Sarge and head out  should have know better :doah:
I fired it up tonight to pack spare parts, tools etc, I backed up to my garage and shut it off....right away I notice a strong fuel odor. Long story short in my original marathon build of the truck, I must have re-used a small section of 25+year old fuel hose one the return for my tank. I guess now with the increased volume due to EFI, that hose had enough. Of course it's directly on top of the tank, but luckily the rear part of my bed floor unbolts (yay me building it that way) but I did way over build that floor as it's at least 60 pounds or more. It also really, really hurts when it gets away from you and lands on your cold hand :woot:
All is good now, Sarge is on the trailer, no longer dumping gas everywhere, both jeeps are ready to go........so come on 6am saturday :waytogo:

Can't wait for a good wheeling trip with some great people

So another trip in the books, and my streak has been broken......literally :haha:

Saturday, less the an hour in I managed to get the truck hung up with both axles sitting on rocks, the passenger rear tire in the air, and the pass side of the bed resting against a tree. It was the first time I "needed" assistance, which turned out to be only 3 guys and a strap to give me just enough of a nudge to get a bite and continue forward, thanks Nick

Then my "never broke" streak ended also
Later that day on a steep nasty climb, a little to much throttle, and some 42's hopping found the strength limit of my front d shaft :doah: glad I built a spare :D

Finally, on our way back to camp today, on a fun rocky climb with a nice ledge at the top, and add in lots of mud from the rain, as I crested it I had to throttle up a bit and suddenly I heard a LOUD bang, the steering wheel spun out of my hands and fluid sprayed out of the front of the truck :doah:
I somehow managed to blow the front cap off of the box :dunno: it was hanging by the assist hose with the o ring and metal retaining ring around the hose. The box is most likely junk now as it broke off about a 1" section of the groove the metal ring sits in. I was able the get the cap back in and hammer the ring back in enough to hold it together to limp it back to camp.
Soo, some repairs are in order :D

Otherwise, had a great trip, the EFI is GREAT!!!!!! I will never, ever, ever wheel a carb'd rig again !!! The system worked flawlessly, I could not be happier with the AFI TBI set up :pimp:

Sound like a good trip. That's a first I've heard about a cap blowing out, but at least you had it all there to go back together. Great to hear results on the afi since mine is going on now and waiting for a fuel pump. Pics are a must next

I will get some pics of the cap once I wash the filthy thing :haha:
All I can figure is maybe the metal ring was not fully seated in the groove :dunno: the more I think about it the more I'm amazed/ baffled by how the o ring and the metal ring both ended up passing the cap and being around the hydro hose !

I hardly have any pics this time but here are a few of mine, my brothers wagoneer, Bens CJ, Brian -swettysblazer and Nick -newoldscottsdale77.

This hole has a sign saying "5 feet deep" , I had always wondered, apparently some one needs to re-measure this one :haha:

Pictures don't do this climb justice! !!! This was my old nemisis, the carb would have no parts of the angle....the efi....just laughed at it :woot:

My brothers rig.....he must have had a dozen people checking it out, and all thought he was crazy for wheeling it

finally Bens new :pimp: CJ . Linked, coiled, built 350, 465, twin stick dana 300, 100" wheelbase....it worked great...couple issues to address but him and his son had a great time

We had a great time despite the weather and breakage and illness (a certain fullsize jeep driver was not feeling well and had to bail early) can't wait for next season :woot:

After going from a carbed rig to a TBI rig, it'll make you almost angry when you see a thread where someone wants to replace TBI with a carburetor.

The CJ was definitely nasty. If it was fuel injected and you guys get the steering worked out it would be killer.

Absolutely, I am honestly amazed by how pleased I am with the swap. Driveablity, be it on the street, almost ready to flop on its side or pointed straight up or down is just awesome and so consistent. Like I said, I will NEVER wheel a carb'd rig again.

Bens already on board for FI, it will most likely be done before next season. It will also be at least hydro assist by then also.

Not the best pics, but here's the steering box. Not really sure why it let go, both sides have damage :dunno: yet when I fired it up and took it off the trailer today, it steered fine, no ps noise, hydro brakes were totally normal and steering felt fine, obviously the box will be replaced though.

Look at the left (closer to the frame) side

the other side, the split was bigger before I beat on it with a hammer after getting the cap back on and seated.
