jt512 submitted a new Build:

86 K5 -"Jacob's monster truck" with a Cummins swap

Well I guess since everyone else has a build thread I might as well too. :D

I have owned K5's for the last 18 years on and off (my 2nd car was an 83) and they are by far my favorite vehicle of all time. Last fall I decided I wanted to build another one and this time do it right , the way I always wanted to. I am pretty much doing this one by myself and from the ground up, I keep finding myself saying "if I'm going to do that, I might as well do this too."

I have a 2 1/2 year old son, Jacob, and he is already convinced that this is HIS truck :D , hence the title "Jacob's monster truck". This will be "our toy" once it's done and since I plan on keeping this one, I will one day give it to him.

Allright enough history , on to some pics!

This was the truck the day I brought it home, I have been dealing with rusty K5's all my life, so this was not a local truck :D.

I found this one on evilbay in TX, it has a swapped in 1969 396 and is an original hydro 465 truck. Stock suspension and axles and almost 0 rust:D:D:D, so I figured it would be a good starting point for my project.

I actually started on this a few months ago, I have completly torn it down to the tub and a frame (which are currently 45 miles away from each other) and I am finally getting into a little bit of assembly.

The 396 will be staying, I have an older 465 205 combo that will go in place of the 465 208 that was there, I also have found my 1 tons (60 and a 14 bolt) that are waiting on gears and install kits.

This one will be a full vert, I have the top, doors and windshield frame from a 75 that I had planned on building and later parted out and scrapped.

That is definitely a great start :thumb:

What are the plans?

This is my helper and future owner of this truck :D

Overall plans include:

- 40"-42" treads (still not sure)
- full cage
- lined interior
- crossover hydro assist steering
- approx 8-9" total lift (includes ORD 1" body)
- complete re wire (the PO was a wiring HACK)

Basicly all of the stuff that's makes these trucks cool! :D

thats awesome man,hes gonna have one sweet truck! those plans r exactly what im trying to reach with my truck...o ya, rust free would be nice too!

o ya...i love that TTR in the background, that was my first dirt bike and those r the best little bike ever.;)

:bow:Big Block!!! And a Stick!!!
Damn, I live in Texas and I had looked for one for a while till I found one in Abilene and jumped on it... I too have a son, soon to be 6 yr. old. And, just as well, he loves it. Right now, I just leave the top off of it and park it in the garage... I too plan on letting him have it when he's of age. But mine is just a measily small block. LOL. Just kidding, I love it and would only get rid of it if I could find a Chevelle to trade for, and even then not sure if I would do it. But don't see myself finding a Chevelle anyone would trade.
There's actually a BUNCH of K5s for sale here in the DFW area right now.
Sounds like you're gonna need to beef up those axles for sure to keep up with the motor...

The TTR is great, we bought that for my wife as her first bike and I dont think I will ever sell it. Especially since it now has a 150cc kit, cam, exhaust, springs, carb mods, air box mods and gearing changes.

I swap out the knobbies and do a few flat track races with it when I can, the adult 100 class is more fun then you can imagine :D

I got this one from somewhere near Irving TX, I ended up having it shipped here, because I could not have flown down and drove it back for twice what shipping was:eek1:.

As far as the axles- Done - I have a D60 front and a 14 bolt rear already, just have to order up my gears and install kits and finish them up :D

Sweet!!! Yeah, Irving's right around the corner from here.
Congrats on the find!!!

Well, I'm in a pic whoring mood tonight so here's a few more during tear down.

These next 2 are the result of the PO mounting the crossmember incorrectly (on top of the lower frame rail) and modifying the floor to clear the tc :doah:you would think that he would have realized something was wrong when the shifter knob would now touch the dash in low :eek1:

and my windstar fans I picked up last weekend. $38 at a local pick and pull

Tune in tomorrow for some sexy bare naked frame pics ! :D

Here are some frame pics, I steam cleaned the whole thing, then media blasted it. The crossmember is built by dcubb and the extra bracket on it is for a future panhard bar (if I need it).

The front spring hangers are were built by yours truly, based off of Kerts (DIY4X) design. They are all 1/4" steel and drop the mounting location of the spings down 1 1/2", I wanted around 8" lift total, I had a set of 6" springs that I wanted to use, so combined with Kerts add a inch and matching + 1 1/2" shackles I am right around 8 1/2" inches. Also pictured is ORD's FUSH kit w/ greasable bushings.

The rear has the ORD 2 1/2" flip kit mounted.

More pics:D:D
