86 K5 -"Jacob's monster truck" with a Cummins swap

Nice work so far, so clean and shiny!:D

What are you spraying on the underside? Just paint, bedliner, undercoating? Anything special?

Thanks  , it's alot of work , and a lot more then I had planned but should be worth it.

As far as coatings go, on the underside I'm using the same products that I used on the frame, Eastwood Company chassis restoration "kit" . I use the Eastwood encapsulator in 2 med coats and then 3 light to med coats of the x treme chassis black gloss. I have used their products a few times and so far and have been really happy with the durability and appearence.

I do plan on using something "tougher" in the wheel wells and high abuse areas, maybe some type of bedliner but I'm not sure what kind yet, still researching :D

I have some new pics I'll post up later or tonight, got more interior work done and hopefully I will get the underside shot this week.

I did the full eastwood chassis kit and it came out awsome until I exposed the truck to a salty winter. Now I have little rust spots coming through 2 years later.

Really , how did you prep the frame? I'm just curious because I have seen some other vehicles that have been done and they have held up beautifully. Maybe your salts even worse then our salt :doah:.

I fully power washed my frame and then wire brushed it. I did 2 medium coats of rust encapsolator, and then either 2 or 3 coats of chassis coat. Somewhere in my build thread is an indepth write up of how I did it.

Small update-- I've been busy this week with other things so not much has been done on the Blazer, I finished stripping the interior (I had to get out from under it for a while). I also got the few holes in the trans hump welded in, mine was spot welded and in drilling them out I had a few go a little deep :doah:. I am going to pick up some sheet metal tomorrow to "smooth" out the firewall since the stock heater box will not be returning.

The big thing I have changed my mind on is the underside. I really do not want to deal will rust any time soon, hopefully ever , so I am going to shot everything with bedliner. I talked to Bryan (Blaze) about AL's liner and I just ordered my stuff today. So anyone else thinking about this, I will have lots of pics to check out. I hope to get the firewall done this weekend and have the underside 100% ready for the liner :D.

hmmmm..... why not bedline the frame? No doubt it'll last longer then any "rust inhibitor" or "coating".... not to mention make it stronger and less likely to crack.

I did think about it, but, like it was already said I could see it "hiding" damage untill it's too late, and unlike the underside of the body there will be brackets, mounts etc. that will be welded or removed from the frame and the "paint" will be alot easier to remove and reapply then a liner type material would be.

On a similar note my liner should be here today, so if things go well I am hoping to get it sprayed this weekend. I have gotten some work done, I should have the pass. side firewall smoothed out and buttoned up this week. I'm doing away with the stock ac/ heater setup infavor of the summit moab heater, it should free up ALOT of room both under the dash and in the engine bay. After all what's the point of ac in a full vert!

More pics as soon as I get it sprayed :D

Sweeet. Call me if you have any questions about spraying it. I'm going to be in Philly all weekend, but I should still have my phone on me if I'm not in a meeting. :D

This is my helper and future owner of this truck :D

Overall plans include:

- 40"-42" treads (still not sure)
- full cage
- lined interior
- crossover hydro assist steering
- approx 8-9" total lift (includes ORD 1" body)
- complete re wire (the PO was a wiring HACK)

Basicly all of the stuff that's makes these trucks cool! :D

Hehehe, your "helper" is already grab'in a gear!

Nice build. I have a 79 Blazer and just bought a 87 Jimmy that Im looking at doing a build up just like yours. I also have a little helper named Jacob, 5 years old, and he calls the 79 "rock crawler" and the 87 "Daddy's truck". And just like you posted, the 87 will be his.

wow, my boy is a little younger than Jake, and he loves our "new" 91 K5. Sorry if this has been covered earlier in the thread, but any special mods to the engine?

subscribed too!

The engine plans are still kind of up in the air, it's a 69 396, it has an aftermarket intake, carb, headers, roller rockers and stock cam (:dunno:) it ran good, but was definetly in need of some "tuning". I am holding off untill later in the build to see how money's holding out before I decide what route I'm going. I may just swap out carbs, change cams and call it good or full rebuild and bore/ stroker kit, but then again I have had my eye on a 496 crate engine :wink1:.

On a side note I had a nice craigslist score thursday night 4 39" swampers on 15x10 8 lug steelies for..........................

wait for it................................................

$125.00 :D:D:D

the only thing better then that was the look on Jake's face the next day when he saw them!!! He is still telling everyone "Daddy got gaint tires for my Blazer". Oh and I mean EVERYONE, the cashier at the wawa, the girl who cuts our hair, random people in the grocery store :haha:.

2 of the tires are in pretty good shape, the other 2 (ones in the pics) are about 1/2 tread. At the very least I've got a couple of great spares, and picking up these has helped make up my mind to run 40's. :D

I have gotten some other stuff done, I'll try to get some pics up soon.

Looks great.
I have a '86 I'm finally puting back together. My 8yr old has been asking how to work on it , so when he gets old enough he can help. I just my have to die first for him to get this one.

Mine was painted about 8yrs ago, They sparyed a rock guard on the bottom before painted and clear coat, and it looks really good.

Look like we are on the similar build with our blazer:bow:
