86 K5 -"Jacob's monster truck" with a Cummins swap

sweet build thread! any recent updates?

No updates, the K5 is currently serving duty as my cummins engine stand and garage floor hold down system :doah: :D . I'm hoping to start making some progress again this winter, some of the other cummins swap guys posting start up and first drive vid's are killing me :D I suffer from severe PPADD ( powersport project attention deficit disorder ) I can't seem to finish a project with out picking up another :doah:, I still have a to do list on the K30, I'm building a 53 Willys wagon for my dad, helping my brother with his Wagoneer 1 ton swap, going to do a big bore kit and head swap on Jacobs quad for next race season and to make it interesting I just picked up a 01 CR250 for myself (I sold the exact same thing when Jacob was born and always missed it ).

My contribution to help get your train back on the tracks:

Cool build. I wanted a 4bt for my 77 stepper but settled on a turbo'd 6.2 due to low budget. My father and I are also building a willys wagon (1956).

^^^Nice, that's exactly what he needed:popcorn:^^^

Once the holidays are done, there WILL be updates, most likely not a start up vid, but work will resume :waytogo:

Sweet, I started the Willys build and now my brother has joined in as well. It will basically be a retirement present for my father. It is a 53 body on a 62 frame with a TBI converted 350, 700 trans, driver side drop 241 running Wagooner Dana 44's with 4.10's, 33" BFG's on old school centerline wheels, AC, power leather Audi seats and scratch built front floors, trans tunnel and firewall. Of course PS! PB and hopefully PW's :D

Any updates?

Martin

Regretfully, no :doah:
It has been serving as a garage floor hold down system and Cummins engine stand for quite sometime. I am going to get the TBI swap done on the K30 and try to leave it alone and just use it........hopefully freeing up some funds and time to get backon the K5.
I really need to focus on getting it to run.....that will really motivate me to get it going :waytogo:

From what I saw during the two minutes I scoped it out, it is doing that job quite well :haha::haha::waytogo:

I'm still sad you sold that second K5. I have yet to ever see a factory TBI/SM465 combo from the factory in either a K5 or a Suburban (I own one of each, but that's not how they left the factory.

What kind of horsepower and torque are you getting to the rear wheels on this project?

Jk! I didn't know you had a build thread for this. Subscribed :thumb:

I know its been awhile, but any plans on running a full topper or a soft top? If so whats your plans? I really want a full vert just thinking the conversion may be the way to go if you can adapt a soft top to it. Also where did you get the conversion parts, and how much? Been looking on CL out in Cali and I can easily pick up a decent almost rust free rig for about 3grand. Full verts are running 5+. For a rig that will spend most of its life covered in the barn I guess I shouldn't worry about it too much.

I have a factory hardtop and eventually plan on picking up a soft top as well. I had a 75 that I had picked up pretty cheap and had planned to build it as it didn't seem that bad, but once I really tore into it, it was much worse then I had hoped. Someone had put full 1/4's on it (chinese junk) that were rotting from the inside out, not to mention they were about a 1/2" off side to side:doah: and the frame it self had rotted through in a few places.

I cut the windshield frame off, saved the doors (they were aftermarket junk as well) but had the caps, window brackets etc, saved the top and all associated brackets.
I cut my windshield frame off about 1/2 way up, used some ~10" pieces of tube as dowels inside the A pillars and after measuring about 32 times 10 different ways :D welded in the 75 upper frame. I simply "capped" the holes on the top of the bedsides and really that's about it. There is actually a pretty good write up in the tech section that has some good pics.

The biggest thing to find is the hardtop (if you really need it) I honestly don't know how much I will even use mine once I have a soft top, the windshield frames seem to pop up in the classified section time to time and then the little caps that go on the doors seem tough to find.

I really NEED to start working on it again, right now I'm trying to get the Willy's done I'm doing for my dad....... maybe this winter I will focus on having it be able to start.......that should motivate me.

Thanks, I have gone over the write up on the home page a few times. It looks easy enough. I plan on running half doors, so I shouldn't need the full door conversion. hmmm

Damn all these ideas in my head. Probably wont be able to sleep tonight.

It's really not that hard to do, I've read your build , you can definitely handle it :waytogo:
I was in the same boat, I had always wanted a full vert (I've had K5's since I was 16 ) and had owned 2 that were complete basket cases, plus the most recent and finally decided it would just make more sense to build one from a rust free truck...................

it's not like I was worried about keeping something original :haha:
