works great.... gonna go over it all tho... clean, paint, grease, etc....

looks like it'll have about an inch or so on either side between the framerails... any bigger, and the hidden winch would be out, but it should work... gonna see about doing a custom lever or solenoid actuated free-spool lever....

hi Kristie... nice to hear/read from you... :D

yup, it was on our huge crane that we use to use occasionally to haul big diesels out of the boats.. it was put on about 4 years ago, the crane is about 40.. The new ownership decided to ditch the crane (thank god, it's dinosauric!) and the winch conveniently went to me.. :wink1:

It wouldn't have been my first choice... But it'll work and should be plenty stout..

I am stoked... was gonna pick up an 8000 for $200, but I'm glad I held off... I deserved a freebie for a change... never knew what it was, as it was tucked in the crane.. musta walked under it 1000 times....

can't wait till sat to tuck it in there and see how it's gonna work out...

also stopped at my steel guy to pick up 2 4' x 8' sheets of 14 gauge and some 3/8" and 1/4" plate to start on the winch plate, backing plates for the flip, floor, yada, yada....

we found one like that for my dads blazer project, 100 bucks and it fits between the front rails:D

good score:laugh:

Any new news?

I love this thread and have been reading it for a while, Just wondering if there were any updates? keep up the good work!

hey, thanks man, appreciate it..

the truck has been on a break for a month or so while I've been gathering suspension stuff, guts for my 1 tons, taking care of house stuff, OT, etc...

I expect to start pounding some labor on it soon... BIG plans for it thru the summer...

One stumbling block that was recently taken care of is I don't need to fix my welder, as work just got me a sweet MillerMatic 252... :saweet::woot: 4 g's worth of welding stuff.. spool gun, killer helmet, etc... Looking to order a nice plasma next week too... So I expect to start fitting up the sliders, tunnel, floor, etc over the next few weeks...

on a little sidenote, personal blog type story, I kinda feel like typing this out... :haha: consider it some insight into my little world if you'd like to read...

speaking of work buying me a welder... some interesting things have been going on at the marina over the last few months...

a couple weeks ago, my department head/ service manager who had been at the place 20 yrs, and ruled the yard, went in partners on and bought a marina.. so he's gone...

that moved my head mechanic up into department head, and me to head mechanic... I guess I can take some pride in the fact that I was moved to that position over any of the other mechanics, who have all been there years longer than me... by them.... thats all that matters, is my shop, my guys, my crew...

management was all for it... Tho I certainly know how to "play" the suit/tie/office jockey/corporate/paperwork nightmare game, and they love me, heck they gave me a car, I'm the grunt that fights them and that way of existing.. brainstorms that some midmanagement paperpusher in another state has come up with to justify his non-billable salary rarely play out well or are effective in my real work world imo.....

The paperwork is stupid and excessive 75% of the time.. thank god I finally got a computer for the mechanic shop, so I can go to their horrible software Syteline to find out my own info on work orders, alter them, etc, on my own without having to wait for the service managers to actually DO THEIR JOB! :haha::mad::doah::(

anyway, one interesting development that has come up the last week or so that has me giddy with anticipation is they want me to develop us a machine shop for me to run in addition to my mechanic/glass duties..

obviously that will cut into my wrench turning, and thats fine, I bleed plenty as it is... I'm VERY excited at the prospect of custom part making.. They're talking about getting me a lathe, bridgeport, etc in addition to my recent welding acquisitions...

I'm quitely very stoked on the possiblities... :wink1:

Wow, sounds like you`ve got your hands full with the new promotion. Congrats Paul :wink1:

That sounds awesome! Lets see: New machine shop, new welder, new plasma cutter, and Ryoken's immagination...the possibilities are endless!

Hmmm.......Machineshop + O.T= Custom parts = fringe benefits?:D

oh, without a doubt.... I plan to be there many a night fabbing up stuff.. now I just need to talk em into a hydro bender!

and thanks for the props man, it always makes ya smile when someone digs your work...

actually, while I'm here I forgot one other soap opera tidbit to that story... my old boss, now marina owner, solicitated me about becoming head mechanic at his new place, "the guy" at his new marina... if my current bosses knew he solicitated me, they'd freak about me leaving...

doubtful that'll i'll leave, but it's nice to have that card...

Options are always a great safety net. Especially when there are management changes, business strategies can sometimes become unpredictable.

It's nice to know some places still show appreciation for their employees. I gather from reading your thread, and your insight into others questions, that it is well earned. Congrats on your promotion!

Wow, congrats. Its even better that your co-workers support you. Sounds like you have an excellent work environment. Im always awed by your ability to have so much progress on your own vehicles, especially when you already do so much at work.

You make me feel like a lazy POS. :doah:

eh, I'm lazing it right now! :doah::o gets harder as I get more ancient..

I really needed a breather from my truck... I was pounding some hard hrs on that, the dash nuisance, OT, etc.. really all I've done the last 4 weeks is yardwork and work on my golf game..

I haven't posted much on the truck as 99% of the projects are unfinished in various states awaiting parts, etc... But I have done a ton of prep work... it's basically 2 framerails and part of a tub at this point... firewall and frame are bare steel... the 700r4 housing is polished.. the 205, 60 and 14 are smoothed and zinced awaiting parts... I'll have a ton of pics of the processes once I start finishing some...

I've also taken some time to re-evaluate the dash project and am optimistic, just need to start throwing some hrs to it.

now if I sat at a desk all day, I'd be chomping at the bit to work all night on it... This has kinda been a healing weekend... no golf, no truck, nothing.. rest my knees...

Sometimes I think I'd rather have a job thats not so demanding, mentally and physically.. ya know, a "sit on an assembly line, put part A in part B" kinda thing... but I suppose the multitude of challenges I run across at work keep my skills honed... if not my body battered.... :doah:

For as much as I dislike the concept behind the corporate-world, I seem to thrive pretty well in it... Hopefully I can start getting back some reward for years of toiling in my trades... gotta really knuckle under and push the next 6 months across the board. from work and making money to my home projects..

gonna hit them up about covering the costs for some machining and welding classes at the local college at night.. my time, their dime... I really want to learn to TIG, tho I wont have that capability till next year probably... so thats one more to add to my plate...

thanks for the well-wishes guys, means alot... :D:bow:

oh, and just a note about the coworker support point...

That is the most important thing to me... It kinda goes against the whole corporate thing of stepping on people to get to the top.. I've noticed that, that everyones out to just cover their own butt...

well, sorry corporate bigwigs, I don't run like that.... I take a beating for my coworkers, and we are brothers... it's definitely an US vs THEM mentality in my shop and we will defend each other till the end... heck, I was in at 4:30 fri to get a boat out we needed done by 10 am.... The boys covered my beer fri night for that one...

That loyalty amongst us may not be the fast road to success in the corporate world but I'll take the long way if need be, to support my friends...
