87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

yes, thank you.. I've had those in my "lathe" folder for awhile now.. the freakin exploded parts view pic sucks.. :haha: but oh well.. been saving all kinds of pics off ebay of various assemblies.. carriage, saddle, gears, etc...

it's about 1/2 way back together.. got all the threading/back gears refurbed and reinstalled, but i need to get the belts before i put the headstock together.. it's kind of a nuisance to change belts, gotta pull the whole spindle/pulley assembly... so when they come in i can get all that back together...

need to modify the motor base plate a bit, as it's not really a motor for this... at some point i'll do a new motor with a reversing switch so i can cut thread...

really what i'm farthest away from is getting the carriage/saddle reassembled and reinstalled... just finished cleaning all those parts today, and painting the pebble cast the green..

it's actually amazing you can basically get most of it used on eghey.. so anything i need, i should be able to find... there's a tailstock there for $125.. if it's still there after i find a chuck, i may get it...

at this point, I'm gonna buy a 3 or 4 jaw chuck, whichever comes up as a deal first.... I'll get a 6", but if an 8" comes up, I'll get that...

here's one i got my eye on..

here's the lathe now going back together..

and here's the underside of the K5 hood.. tomorrow I'll order some glass so i can finish it up and get it in primer... the cowl "cavity" was filled with 2 part expanding closed cell foam, shaped, than glassed on top and faired... the "wall" is 1/8 composite, but I need to finish the areas at the back of the hood...

thanks for those other links.. :D that group may be helpful...

that collet chuck setup wouldn't work, wrong spindle size... mines 1 1/2" 8 TPI... that's bucks too, I'm not really sure what I could use the collets for anyway..

I just wanna get the cheapest 3 or 4 jaw that fits my spindle, so i can get some things chucked up and play with it some... but I also wanna get a 6 or 8" diameter so i can fit decent size stuff in like coupling flanges from the boats..

stuff like this...

it seems to me like my best route is to just buy chucks that thread on to my spindle.... all the "plain back" chucks, that fit/bolt to a backing plate (which would be 1 1/2" 8 TPI) have to be fitted to individual backing plates.. tho I'm guessing some could be fitted to multiple chucks..

seems like a waste to me, your buying a backing plate and chuck for each one... tho you may save some on the chuck over an 8 TPI, buying both seems to cost way more than just the 8 TPI chuck.. tho I'm guessing the variety of "plain back" chucks is more..

this was on eghey the other day for $1500... just about the same unit as mine, just a different quick change gear cover to the left and a bit longer bed...

but with all the bells and whistle, forward/reversing switch, steady rest with rollers, drill chuck on the tailstock, etc.... it's funny how it's almost, or the same color as mine is... :pimp:

so, in the end, I'm hoping mine looks about like this...

and me, looking much more like a lathe now.... just need to mod the motor base and mount it, get a chuck, and i could actually spin something! :haha: hopefully i can win a chuck auction by the end of the week..

the carriage and saddle still need some assembly, I'll get to that this weekend... the lathe gods where's smiling on me and the belt's ended up being green, they look good... :pimp:

hmmm, i think albums are limited in photobucket to 2500 images, my main one won't upload, had to put em in another one... :dunno:

other than that blurry one.... :doah: :haha:

yeah, it's, parden the pun, night and day difference in there now... ;)

VASTLY more enjoyable working down there now.... I expect to be spending MUCHO time in there over the next year or 2, or 7... :haha:

maybe I'll change it from The Dungeon to The Lab..... :pimp:

"Ryoken's Lab".... :waytogo:

I like the sound of that.

I think you need to put a new timing seal kit on that lathe :haha:

btw... I never took a pic :p:,

but shifting the trailerqueen back toward the camera, taking up the forward 1/2 of the LAB ;) by the doors, doesn't work right now......

I tried it and put it back.... :doah::o

it's doable,

100_0133_zps36f3653d.jpg

but I really can't have ANYTHING in front of the middle pole along the sidewall to the right.. right now my 2, 1/2 barrel fiberglass and steel bins are there..

and i like/need them for now... if I never replace the washer/dryer, I could move em there?!??! :dunno: eh, doing laundry at work is kinda ghey...

tho I'm really thinking of building a custom dual material rack... :doah::haha:

I'd really like to try it again at a later date, I think it would make the LAB a funner place to work, clean area to the back left by the box... maybe some cool floor mat/carpet/rubber thing.. than the dirtier lathe/welding/fabbing/workbench vise kinda area to the right.... a smaller project *coughWilly'scough* project would probably fit stupid good..

well, off to create catalytic reactions in the LAB..... :haha: now, where'd that trademark thingy go?!?!!? :haha:

how much reinforcement would that big beam need to allow you to remove that load bearing pole in the middle?

whotf knows, I rent.. not gonna get that crazy.. yes, if i owned it, the ceiling sheetrock would have been down, and redone yrs ago... i think its steel...

oh, and if my stairs where external, and i had that space in the garage, it wouldn't be an issue....

tho, external stairs can suck too.. my bud has the exact mirrored house/garage, but the stairs are wood, covered external.. bigger garage... big screen... bar..... ok, he wins... I need a good stool for the shop... got my new MSD banner to go up too.. in front of the cubbyhold shelf in the back....

oh, and and first thing if it was mine would have been to blow out the bathroom behnd the file cabinets.. been my nemesis since day one.. never tinkled in ;)... stuffed with .... schtuff..... :haha:

tho, external stairs can suck too..

External stairs do suck...I had them for a few years...ice...snow...slipped...boards rot and fall through...I don't want stairs again....that's why my current house is flat level...no stairs...

eh, I don't plan on going anywhere.. I get, what i consider, a pretty smokin deal on this place...

I ride my bike down there when it's warmer... little bike path/boardwalk thingy.... I'm 5 blocks from the bay beach...

I've been ON the beach sand, swimming, twice since I moved here 18 yr's ago... :haha:
