87K506 Build thread

wow!! awesome progress man! you did an excellent job. i love cruisin the coast in the k5, nothing else like it.

Great story. My dad and I got everything off and rolled the blazer out so we could sweep the shop out. Well he's backin away from the compressor and steps on my hood sittin on the ground....pop...nice lil dent in the hood that is otherwise straight :(

Ended up running over my hood after an engine swap :doah:had to find a replacement

Looks great man , diggin the bed liner!

thats killer! drove through Waco once on my way from San Antone to DFW to visit family and loved it. Bitchen truck!

Man that thing looks great! Hope to get mine done to go back to the beach in, Brings back some good old memories for the past.

Current plans are to pull the transmission over spring break to fix some leaks and maybe go through it. Then over summer, we are pulling a 400sb from a 76 truck I have and probably gonna tear it down, do a basic rebuild, and drop in place of the 350. Just have to do some research on what heads and/or intake I need to use to reuse my headers and the stock fuel injection. I'd like to drop the 400sb in with the cam it has, and a decent set of heads and intake, but my main thing is having a reliable, torquey motor, that I can reuse my headers and keep the fuel injection

oh and I finally found a 14bsf thats a 6 lug. It already has 4.56s and a limited slip, should be picking it up fairly soon, and replace the bastard 10bolt.

I think you did a great job on that truck and should be very proud. The only question I have is how did you decide on that shock angle in the rear and is it working good? Is that more for crawling style wheeling as apposed to dessert and jumping style?

mainly from reading this article:
http://coloradok5.com/ranchoreview.shtml

If you can't tell, my suspension setup is damn near identical to that setup. My rear shocks are inboarded with a bit more angle because the shock was pretty long (they weren't designed for that mounting style, or a k5, but I got an absolute steal on them). With the more angle, it prevents the shock from bottoming out at full stuff. Supposedly the more angle you have on the shocks, the less effective they are, but I can't really tell a difference. The rear tends to come up (not terrible) some when you get on the brakes hard, but I think thats a combination of having the lift, inboarded shocks, and alot of weight gone in the rear.

BTW, I used this kit to do the inboarded shocks. Its from DIY4x and they are a sponsor here, and awesome to do business with

Part of the reason I went the way I did was that my shocks were very long. Also, I had wanted to inboard the shocks, as it just makes more sense. The shocks are now mounted in the path that is more like what the axle travels when it flexes. I was shooting for something that was daily driveable, with a lot of flex. I succeeded, except I now need to cut fenders :(

Well quick update on current plans. My current plans are to get the 14b swapped in and re-gear the front. This is because I think most of my driveline noise is caused by having no angle on the rear ujoint in the rear drive shaft.
Then next will probably be wet sanding the paint and building a set of front fenders. The new front fenders will have the wheel wells widened so that I can stuff 35s, yet have stock looking fenders.
I plan to buy a rebuild kit from monster transmission to rebuild the 700r4. The kit should hold 450hp/500tq. I want to do it myself, and don't believe it is beyond my ability if I take my time and becareful with it. I have a couple of friends that have rebuild transmissions to help me along.

Then finally will be dropping in the 400 previously mentioned. I have talked to Brian and TBIchips about cam and head selection. The current plan is a 406 with either a set of Patriot Heads http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PAR-2171/
or
Edelbrock Heads (brian's recommendation) http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-5073/
Motor will reuse stock crank and rods, but have new bearings though-out, ARP hardware, and new pistons to bring the static compression to around 10.1-10.5:1. I will use an adaptor with probably an edelbrock intake manifold to retain the TBI, which will receive plenty of mods to support the motor. Cam choice will most likely be one of Brian's recommendations so that it will work well with the TBI. I am going to probably go with Brian to tune the motor, hoping that it will make around 450hp/500tq, which will be right at the edge for the transmission.

Timeline for this is unknown. Hopefully have the fenders/rear-end/wetsanded paint by end of summer along with some little miscellaneous things. Anyways... thats where I'm at.
