87K506 Build thread

When do you wanna start on mine?
depends on how much you wanna pay me :D

I really could do this for a living. Even though I cussed the thing daily, I absolutely enjoy working on vehicles. I have an interesting business plan coming together, just hope I can follow through with it after I graduate.

Just figure I would bump this with a little update. I'm going to be finishing up my summer classes next week and will be heading home for a bit. The major priority is getting a new-to-me 14 bolt semi-floating with 4.56s swapped in, get the disk brakes on the rear and working, and regearing my front with matching 4.56s.

Hunting season is getting here and I need me some 4x4!

Update: 14bsf is finally in. I didn't take a whole lot of pictures as I was busy. I had a friend help me one night, but I pretty much had to muscle this thing in and out mocking up spring perches and shock tabs by myself, so thats why there is a lack of pictures. Sorry they are were taking with my blackberry, I couldnt find my camera

Hacking off old spring pads, bumpstop pads, and shock tabs. I nicked the tubes a couple of times with the torch (beer might have been involved :D) but I welded the nicks up and smoothed them out.

Buddy of mine, Evin, grinding off what my bad torchwork left behind:

Cleaned up and tacking spring pads in place to mock up:

Test fitting, making sure pinion angle was correct as well as spring pad spacing and placement:

Few pics of the disk brake setup that went on. Unfortunately I didn't take any pics of it actually on the axle.

Everything welded up, painted up, and finally home:

Tire sits just outside the fenderwell now, same as the front. This axle should be 3" wider, but I didn't measure it:

FYI, the 10bolt yoke did swap over to this 14bsf, and I didn't need a u-joint. Only issue I have now, is that with the axle fully drooped out, the ujoint/driveshaft binds. I need to eventually have a high angle shaft made, but that will be after I settle on what transmission will go behind the 406.

It's only gonna be full droop when you jump it, flexing probably won't bind it. Only one way to know though.

I like it so far. It was a good score, 3000 miles on 4.56s, disk brake conversion, and most importantly FREE! The gears are awesome, as I have always driven lifted trucks that were undergeared. And knowing that I'm not gonna break it offroad is nice

Dumb question, but it does it matter if gears are for the front or rear? I'm trying to find some 4.56s for the front, and as far as I can think, it shouldnt matter and I should be able to just buy a set of gears for a GM 8.5 and put them in.

Bumping this too the top, almost a year later.

I have had some pretty big life changes. Graduated college, got a job in the automotive industry, and bought a house. I'm now getting my garage in order to do some work finally.

*interesting note. January 1st, 2011 I blew the 700r4. Lost 3rd and 4th. My dad hooked me up as a graduation/birthday gift of a fairly built 700r4. So at least the Blazer has come back better than before.

Good news! Also, i cant help but notice that your update has a "8/31" reference. Thats actually next week!

I need to post my interior. I did quite a bit to it, and never posted pictures. One of these days I'll man a camera and get some.

Interior looks like:
Stock seats covered in Wet Okele Black and Grey covers
Tuffy locking console
Bedlined front to rear
Color change from Tan to Black/White paint
Diamond plate side panels
1300rmw stereo including 2 12" Elemental Designs in a downfiring, bed lined box that locks to the floor with 4 locks (pretty theft proof), 6 Infinity Kappa speakers, Eclipse head unit, etc.
The biggest issue was the color change. You don't realize how involved that is until you start doing it :doah:
