88 Crew Cab Dually 2wd to 4wd Build

With 52" springs on the street he will want the sway bar

I drove from California to Nebraska on 52" springs on the streets without a sway bar. I am not about to go add one.

It's a dually, it'll be fine.

its becuase you have the beard.
i can say driving mine when i finally had the 52s on, curves at more than 30mph definitly would've been nicer with a sway bar. atleast the vacuum from my butt pucker kept me in the seat.

Don't heat it, you'll screw up the material.

I'd run it without and go from there. Maybe save your pennies and buy one from ruffstuff. He's selling them now.

I plan on trying it out first but I have my 98 sas for reference and I'm pretty sure I'll want one. Heat shmeat it may just get tranformed to make it work. No way paying that much for a sway bar.

Fair enough, you might get away with it forever and it won't be a problem but I don't know what material they make the stock sway bars out of. I've worked with some "spring" steels before and they can have odd side-effects when heated.

Would you heat the main leaf in your leaf spring pack, bend it a little then go wheel on it? I doubt it.

Started on the rear switching the 2wd to 4wd front spring brackets. Rivets SUCK!!

what all is there different here, other than the obvious length increase? do you have to swap these to do the 4x conversion? or can you just add front leaves? sorry but i am planning a CC c20 to k30 conversion & was thinking of using an a-bomb from diy & his rear shackle mount for the front spring , but if i have to rework the rears also i might just leave that truck 2wd and use it to tow my k5 & build the 85 k10 i have w/parts ive gathered up for the CC 2wd to 4wd conversion...hmmm:doah: i have to many irons & none of them are really in the fire .... at all:haha:

I'd say you don't have to but it did help my pinion angle a bit by dropping it down. Do the conversion it's really not bad. The one main thing that needs to be addressed is the new engine xmember. You'll have to make that yourself since there is no aftermarket support just yet. Kert??

Really?? thats your argument? since you did it one time and didn't die, this guy should listen to you on completely different type of build :rolleyes:

Do you drive the truck dailly? Do you Tow with it? would you feel safe letting someone who was new to driving use it?

52"/56" sprngs are awesome because they flex and ride great, they do NOT handle worth a ****. that is fact.

I do daily it at times. It is too tall to tow with, but I have pulled an unloaded trailer with it. He is running a crew cab longbox. It is much longer and more stable.

I can tell from personal experience a crew cab on 52" handles just as bad as a blazer on 52" there is way to much sway and brake dive. now if he had some custom made deavers or alcans that had a stiffer spring rate it would handle better then stock 52" but you would still want a sway bar for towing and street use.

and this argumet is pointless anyways HE WANTS A sway bar so that should be enough right there.

Got the new xmember all buttoned up and installed. Decided to mount a plate on the side of frame, tied it inot the xmember to cover those big ass holes that the 2wd susp left.
Then got the shackle flip mounted. I expected it to be a lot lower but it actually shows level. The shackle angle isn't great and it really turned the pinion angle up. I was planning on getting new leafsprings but HOLY COW $600 is way too much. So, this just might have to do since I dont plan on driving it whole lot.

What length are those shackles? Maybe a touch longer would get it to kick back and get you headed in the right direction.
You going to cut and turn the perches or get some shims?

Shackles are already 5". So, I dont think I would feel comfortable going any longer. I would just use some shims to turn it back down.

Found another pic that shows what I'm working with. Rear springs are pretty flat but lean way back because of the flip.
One idea that comes to mind is find some 2-4"lift aftermarket springs then shorten the flip to only 2inches and play with a shackle.
