88 K5 Diesel - Tranny/Trans Adapter Install

Lol true. Ordered through Summit because for some reason buying and shipping through them was about 150 cheaper than direct from AA.

I'm definitely following this build. My first vehicle I owned was a '83 civilian diesel K5 so I'm kinda drawn to diesel K5s whether they're military or civilian versions. I'd love to find a '88-'91 K5 that has a factory 6.2 under the hood but they're almost non existent in my area.

No doubt, here too. People always ask me if I swapped the hood ornament and door decals over. I got lucky; my buddy bought mine down in Florida then drove it all the way back to Calgary only to lose interest and sell it to me. Then last year he went and bought an 86 diesel Jimmy and he's just starting to plan his build now lol. Can't look a gift horse in the mouth!

Well some progress is better than none. Got out today for 3 or so hours and go the tcase and tranny out with the clutch. Tomorrow will pull the xover, xmember, oil pan, and should be able to get the oil pump, rear main seal, stud/girdle done and buttoned up. Still need to get the NV4500 over to the machine shop too. AA calls for the output shaft to be cut to 4.498" and suggests using a cutoff saw. I don't know about you guys, but I don't trust myself to get anywhere near that accurate lol! I'll take it in for the 4 minutes it'll take them to do it for me.

Well, I took off the crossover and the engine crossmember, fully intended to do the bottom end tonight. Turns out I couldn't resist that fancy shiny adapter just sitting there looking all pretty... At least I got something done tonight.

Obviously a little clean up is required before that hot mess goes anywhere near the bottom of my truck, and I've still got to pull it to do the sealant, but it's looking good from where I'm sitting tonight. One step at a time.

Well, as usual progress is slow. Work's been far too busy for my liking, and it's springs so obviously into the camping and quadding already. That said, damn it's time to get the truck up and running. Not great stuff today, but pulled the engine xmember and got into the bottom end.

Eff me I was happy to find my mains crack free...

But like I said not a whole lot today. Got the DSG girdles in, new oil pump, new rear main, and buttoned her back up.

I was going to start pulling the top end off the engine next, but seeing as my welder may be going back to work right away, I'm going to stab the tranny and get the xmember fabbed up while he's here, THEN on to the top of the engine. Still not looking forward to pulling the dash to get at my pedals, but at least the dirty crank work is done.

Cool beans. IMO you have the unpleasant part done, the upper end should be funner. :waytogo:

Couldn't agree more! Should only take me a couple hours to tear down to cylinders, but lots of little nitpicky stuff to do once the heads are out... AC coil has to come out, mount the clutch master, mod the clutch pedal.... Ugh. Still, can't wait to get the tranny put in so I can sit there shifting and making vroom vroom sounds!

Well crap. Wanted to put the trans up tonight, so installed my new input shaft. Turns out I didn't pay attention ordering and ended up with the MW3 input shaft, not the 6.34 MT8. No wonder it was so hard to get in. :doah:

Anybody happen to know where to source a good quality new one? Lots of MW3s out there, but the only MT8s I seem to be able to find are "good quality reproductions" made in Taiwan. I'm not doing it twice (3 times). Unfortunately AA doesn't have an MT8 version to match the MW3 I ordered...

The cost bugs me, but the delay REALLY bugs me!

Edit: The alternative is one of these pilot repair sleeves. Anybody used one before, and do they work ok or am I just going to be looking for a new shaft anyway?

Well finally got back to work yesterday. Got the clutch and bh installed, started tearing the engine down. Picked up materials to box some frame and build my xmember this morning so I'll get on that today.

Forgot that I hadn't ordered the block off for the evaporator yet so went onto classic industries last night and ordered it up. Unfortunately got a call from them today that my shipping had increased. Called in and they want a total of $80 to ship a fiberglass panel? That's insane, cancelled that one. Anybody ordered and modified the one from PBFab?

http://pbfab.com/73-87-firewall-filler-panels

Little concerned with their disclaimer that fab may take up to 14 weeks, but I'm guessing it doesn't take as long for a stamped panel.

Other alternative is to build something, which is probably what's going to happen if PB takes too long. No way I'm paying $80 USD to ship a fiberglass panel from CI...

Well nuts to it. Decided to make something.

Took the original cover, cut the evaporator cover off with a zip disc.

Cleaned and prepped.

First time using fiberglass so there's a little air in there, but should serve the purpose.

Win! Let it cure overnight, once I get out of the office will clean up the edges, paint it black, and should be plenty of room for the bigger turbo. ;)

Did the oil pump come with the pick up tube & screen installed ?..
I've always hated installing them myself--never really trust them to stay in place..and I'm hesitant to go brazing one on,might warp the hell out of the pump casting & cover..

The '87 6.2 I had given to me with a busted crank had no pump screen, just the tube with the angled cut end--it may have been knocked off between the time the engine was pulled out and I got it though--it was sitting upside down in a field for a good year before I got it,and the oil pan was a fairly new GM replacement, and just held on by a few bolts..

I should have stored that engine in my garage, but I had no room,so I left it on an engine stand outside, but under a tarp and the overhang of my house roof--it was probably able to be re-used then if I had a reground or used crank to put in it,but by now I bet the cylinder walls are rusty..it ran sweet till the day the crank broke..

I took the oil pan off to use on my truck, and haven't put it on yet..that was like 3 years ago--(I just screwed big bolts in the holes on the original pan,brake-cleaned the crap off it, and smeared Mar-Glass bondo over them, and some "Ultra-Black" and is pretty much stopped the leaks....:doah:)..but it still has many useable parts--good exhaust manifolds,a j code intake, injection pump, heads, injectors, water pump--seeing 6.2's are kind of scarce here now,I figured I'd better grab it when I could..

Nope wasn't installed, but it was a hell of a push to get the tube into the pump body. I'm hoping it's going to stay put, thought about putting a couple dabs of solder on it just to be sure. May still do that, now you've made me more paranoid!

Extra stuff, always the way to go. I had a spare 6.2 kicking around that I pulled just about everything off, then a 6.5, and have another 6.5 on the engine stand as we speak. The attic in my garage is looking like a parts store and couldn't be happier for it. Hell an engine is worth it just for those tiny screws that hold the injector lines onto the retainers at the valve covers. Hate those things...
