89 Blazer w. CUCV cab and axles

This build looks good. I'm debating about doing something similar but may do a k5 instead and still dovetail it front and rear. Just can't decide.

One thing at a time right. Sometimes the parts determine the build. Such was the case here. It was intended to be a serious wheeler. But when I put on the new GM panels that I had and the cowl induction hood, it changed course and will probably be more of a fun cruiser/daily driver. At least for now :cool1:.

Started to fix the antifreeze leak and decided to change all the radiator hoses. One had to be ordered so, it should be in this week. Changed the oil in the mean time and started to put things back together. Things that were disassembled years ago. All the parts and bolts were still there though. Should have a chance to finish off the radiator hoses this week and then start on the door window assembly. Also, thinking about putting 4" springs in the front vs. the 6" that are there now. Mainly for ease of access and so it will fit in the garage w/o changing the wheels/tires.

In other news, I traded the 1991 3/4 ton Suburban for a pretty nice, all original K5. It's nice having a K5 that is actually on the road. Even if it has 3.08 gears.

Made some progress on the interior. Mainly in choosing a direction. I was tossing around the idea of converting to manual but ended up with the goal of having power windows that work great. Manual windows would have been nice for door removal purposes. But, the prospect of finding blue manual window door panels and the fact that this is turning into more of a lifted and legal rig helped to change that. All the doors really needed were some functioning windows. Ended up buying two new AC Delco window motors to have that become a reality. After some maintenance and lube on the regulators, the door windows now go up and down better than any other square that I have owned :woot:.

So, I mentioned in the last post that a nice original 1987 K5 found it's way here. And then it snowed. I used to plow the driveway with a M1009 Blazer and loved it. Tight turns are necessary so the short wheelbase works out well. So a plan was formed to find a plow for the Blazer and I did. Found a whole complete 1991 K5 Blazer with a nice plow for $600. It evens runs and drives (barely-transmission has no reverse). It should be called the Hansel & Gretal K5 because it leaves a trail of rust crumbs wherever it goes :smile1:. It has a hydraulic pump/belt drive pump type of plow. So, I was comparing notes on the 1987 K5 and the 1991 K5 and realized the belt configurations were totally different. For some reason I thought all TBIs had the serpentine belt set up. All this to say that the brackets will not transfer to the 1987 K5. But they will transfer to the 1989 K5 Trazer. So, it looks like the Trazer will be getting a plow. That means lots of clean up and paint to get it ready for installation. Hope to finish the plow removal tomorrow. Then start cleaning up and painting of the plow frame and brackets. Maybe even powder coating them :grind:.

take pics of the plow stuff.

I prob help out a lot .

its more than likely a fisher .

some guys are still selling n.o.s. engine install kits with the brackets and pulley if you wana keep it live hydro .

It is a Fisher and the plan is to keep it live hydro. Any comments on plowing with a lifted rig? It is funny that you responded because I was thinking of your old blue truck when I was trying to think of lifted plow rigs.

still got the old girl .

here is the newer version in slow progress in MY shop now. https://ck5.com/forums/threads/plow-machine-full-rebuild-under-way-post-39.309865/

biggest thing I can say is plow gide markers you can see. / now the area your plowing since you cant see as good in front lifted up / otherwise not to different .

and last season i swapped out my old dryrotting general grabber m/t tires for brand new bfg at and WOW what a difference this setup did with just a tire swap .

You can swap the entire serpentine setup over to the 1987.

Martin
Thanks for the heads up Martin. Have you done that before? It sounds like a good idea. I will check it out to see how much of an issue rust is going to be.

Yeah, I have done a couple.

You have to swap the water pump, and the fan with it, as they both spin the opposite direction of a V-belt setup.

The idea of putting the plow on the Trazer had grown on me since it would be a good way to keep it in use in the winter. But it's the same story for the 1987 K5. Looks like its decision time. Nice to know there is a choice there.

i put a 88-95 serp belt setup on a 79 engine 1 time . only difference was the 3 bolts for p/s pump to bracket went American since I used the older 79 pump .

Where are these, "n.o.s. engine install kits" you speak of?

Here's a pic of the plow donor. It is pretty much all original which means it hasn't been messed with too much.

Life happened. Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, then I hit 88 mph and saw some serious poo :burnout:. Just glad to be back on it really. My carpet finally came in so, I will get back on it to do that and the plow. And more pics .

Looks a lot better than I was expecting for a plow rig. Looks cleaner than my Blazer, come to think of it. :dunno:

The pictures were kind to it. It is the rustiest K5 I've ever seen. I keep trying to talk myself into turning it into a budget wheeler but every time I look under it, I sober up. Most of the nuts twist off with the bolt or just get cut off. That's why the garage is open in freezing cold weather :haha:.

I was thinking the same thing when I found this today!

Cool that you still have it!
You did a nice job on it, would make a fun plow truck...really sweet looking one!

this guy has a few kits for sale .

look here in fisher docs for exact kit # you need http://library.fisherplows.com/publications.asp?cat=47

click http://library.fisherplows.com/publications.asp?cat=105 this is the brake down of engine / options to pin point a kit # . some kits fit 2-3 different combos . so you might have to go with a close one and make it work .

3 of 4 spring plow ?

3 spring is 7ft 6" down and light duty .

4 spring is 8ft and up hd series plows .

truck frame brackets are different with the split so you cant just drive up with your 7ft off and hook to a 9ft blade .

I have both a 8ft and 9ft for my truck these days .
