'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
I wonder why some bolts are grade 8 and some are grade 5?
I was told years ago grd 5 will smeere before it pops . grd 8 will just pop . there close to each other in strength .

this info was told to me from a guy who built overhead cranes for a living . he said they don't ever use grd 8 in them .

I wish I would have adjusted the detents before I dropped the cab on, I can't access my front rail. Learn from my mistake.

I like that site tube on the magnum, slick.....

Are you going to have the clearance above the magnum for linkage?
Should. I need to flip the lever around 180°.

I was thinking it would be easy to connect the levers and I should be able to get a feel for the resistance. It looks like it would be hard to adjust them in place.

bench adjustments and setup is your best friend .

i have set up 4-5 twin sticks or tripple sticks and its best done 95% on a bench unless you have no floor .

now there is the 6 lever combo i did not to long ago . . . .:doah:

Thanks for the compliments guys.

As soon as we can get a couple of jobs out of the shop I'm hoping to get the truck in and work on the swap. My tentative plan is to buy the transmission controller and install/wire it before I put the transmission in.

Was that FB guy any help on the trans controller stuff?

Yes and no. He has one of the upscale Holley EFI kits (dominator or terminator - can't remember which now) and it came with an extra tap for the TPS sensor already in the harness. He is using the same USShift Quick4 controller I'm planning to use that @sweetk30 recommended. He had positive things to say about it, so that helps confirm the decision.

Seems like I saw a Holley pigtail available with the TPS tap, could you use that with your stuff?

I found one that I'm going to order from Summit. It's not made by Holley, but it seems to be one that a lot of people have used successfully. Just haven't found evidence of someone using it specifically on a Sniper setup. So I will be sure to post back with my results. @sweetk30 said he had talked to Holley about using it on a Sniper and they said it would be fine.

Good to hear! I'm trying to think of what else I "need" from Summit so I can get up to the $100 for free shipping. :haha:

Late to the game, but I adjusted my detents on the bench before putting into the truck. Got them as easy feeling with the shifters as I could on the bench. it's always going to be a bit different once it's in the truck and drive-shafts are hooked up cause now you are fighting the whole drivetrain a bit more, but I feel like adjusting the detents off the truck first made the initial feeling once in the truck better. Would be annoying to adjust them in the truck, though I think it can be done in mine.

I guess I never noticed that ORD's Magnum has the shift rail on the top of the case...you gonna have clearance issues with the shifter bracket to the cab?

I don't think so. I don't plan to clock it flat. I was playing around with it a little on the jack yesterday because I can tilt it. My original thought was to put the bottom of the NP205 at the same place as the bottom of the 4l80e pan (bearing in mind it's the extra capacity pan). After thinking about it more, the trans pan is far forward from the breakover point. The tcase is still forward of the breakover, but closer. So I think I will clock it so it is about 1" higher than the bottom of the 4l80e pan.

My buddy Nick wanted to clock the NP205 in his K30. We decided to skip it because the taller frame means the bottom of the tcase was only hanging about 3/4" below the frame. So with my plan above, I should end up just above the bottom of the frame - I think. I was going to try and figure out the clocking before install, but I'm thinking I'll just have to do it in the truck.

That's the first thing I noticed an mentioned earlier.

Sounds like you can keep the clocking to a minimum which is a good thing for your front shaft angle & other clearance issues related to clocking the case.
