'90 K5 'Barney'

I've had an intermittent check engine light come on at highway speeds throwing the EGR code, I followed the instructions for diagnostics on this web site and it flunked the vacuum test. http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/258416
I bought a new AC Delco and in the process of removing the old I knocked the vacuum control selonoid and knocked the nipple off. :doah: Installed a new one and we were rolling, I'm happy to report the truck runs much better at part throttle or if you get on it, it really made an improvement.

My wife was super excited for this, she had it made for me for Christmas and said it came in today and could not wait to give it to me so I got it early. I'm not sure where it's gonna end up, maybe on the inner bedside or above the rear view mirror on the headliner.:dunno:

Well I trashed the tranny driving it without lockup I lost 3rd and 4th, I probably shouldn't have taken it on a 200mi round trip but you know, live and learn! :doah:

Got Barney loaded up and I'll drop him off at lunch for his tranny rebuild tomorrow. I got an LMC dash pad for Christmas but the dang thing is super dark, like almost black I'm not sure if I'll use it or not.

Picked Barney up today, apparently he is pissed, after a full tranny rebuild he decided to to peg the temp gauge and the radio just will not work! :doah:
He’s being a moody teenager, I gave him $1,300 for the trans and he’s acting out I guess!:dunno:

Not a big update but I sprayed the console with SEM 15643 Pacific Blue, it’s not as close as I would have liked to the original color but it’s must better than the peeling blue with tan underneath that it was. Anyone know of a better color or should I just embrace it and spray the new dash cover and old door panels with the SEM?

Also, tinted windows! :woot:

what happened?

I’m confident it’s not overheating because when cold it reads under 100 but after 30 seconds of idling it gradually climbs to 210 and in about a minute it pegs out. I’m guessing it’s the sensor :dunno:, I haven’t made time to fool with it yet to know for sure. Radio backlight works but nothing else it’s always been a fickle sort so I’m not surprised it’s quit on me. Once I find the right interior color I plan to paint the dash pad I have from LMC (dashes direct) and while replacing the dash I plan to add an aftermarket radio and replace speakers in the dash along with new vents and such.

CK5 night shift here, got off work and went to the shop to clock in.

So as some may have noticed I’ve been having some ignition issues and then it died on the way home yesterday....well I got it back to the shop and pulled the distributor cap off, pulled the #1 plug and because I have a pit went below to hook the starter switch to bump it over to TDC.

Well! :yikes: That is a broken crank right there! This really changes directions here, if you scroll back I said this was supposed to be a slow build but damn it if the only things breaking are the expensive ones! I really did not know that this could happen by driving it with the misfire, but live and learn the same as with the tranny. My wife will be so impressed. :haha:
I really wanted to slap some heads on this bottom end and see what kind of gains I could get but now...goodness I have to make a lot of choices. I’m gonna need to sleep on it, or better yet, drink on it.

I have a little bit of money but that’s supposed to be for other projects on the shop. I guess something is going to have to be sacrificed somewhere.

That sucks...I have a 91 K5 with a good 350 that I'm planning on putting a L29 in.
I'm not going to use the motor and it can probably get you on the road relatively inexpensively...
PM me if you're interested.

I’m really thinking short term slapping that old race car motor in there for shits and giggles, only down side there is I know I have to swap the cam so it’ll play nice with the TBI stuff.

But who knows, if ACM and I can strike a deal I might be back at square one in a hurry!
:woot:

Definitely not in the cards, I already have too many options as it is. I’ve gotta go count up all my pennies...

I thought 6.2 oil burners broke cranks like that! Must have been a hell of a miss!

All kidding aside, bummer on the broke crank. Hope you get something swapped in soon.

It was missing like crazy, I’ve never seen or heard of one breaking like this after a miss but if I had I assure you I’d have parked it. Oh well this is a learning experience. I just wish it had done it two or three months down the road rather than a week after paying for the tranny so I could do the headers, exhaust, heads, cam and lifters without having to worry about where the money was going to come from.
