90 k5 Blazer "Jenny Lee" build (NEW GEARS!!)

After a couple of years of looking for a 4x4 in the Coos Bay, Oregon area I gave up. Trying to find something that hasn't been beat to the ground and rusted out is hard to find around here.

And, since I'm new to this thread, how hard is to find decent sheet metal in Oregon? I figured you guys had plenty of it out there. :dunno:

Well the two local pick and pulls have a few k5 blazers and trucks around. The frames and body are the only things left on most.
 
After a two week trip with the family this is what was waiting for me when I got home. Its an ac delco manual rear window regulator I got from a guy off of ebay. I am assuming that both arms are supposed to be flat as one is bent.BLAZER_MAN_LIFT.JPG BLAZER_MAN_LIFT_2.JPG
 
Any of you guys have any manual tailgate window cranks laying around you want to sale? I'm converting my power window to manual and need a crank. Been looking on ebay and finding a couple for around $100. Looked on LMC Truck and all the parts add up to that much. I would like a GM part and not an aftermarket if possible. A good used one would be great. Thanks.
 
Well, so after ordering parts off of ebay and getting the only two manual tailgate cranks in a 50 mile radius of home from the junk yards I thought I had it made. I was wrong. I got everything installed and moving. Everything was going great until the back end of the center of the crank broke. So I had to take it all out and reinstall the power stuff back in so at least I could get the window back up. On the bright side I can take the tailgate apart with my eyes closed now.
 
Sorry to hear that, I hate it when stuff like that happens. What part of the crank broke?
 
The part of the handle that goes into the middle of the handle. The piece that has the lock cylinder in it. The back of it sheared off.

That appears to be what happened to mine. I have a manual crank, but the hole in the middle is empty. The P.O. welded a socket to the regulator inside and now the window goes up and down via a 3/8" ratchet & extension. Definitely tacky, but so far the handle mechanism is happier than the glass/track relationship.

I was thinking about doing the same thing.
 
It's a tacky solution, no doubt about it. But it has worked.

I plan on welding a socket to the back of the regulator. I think I can leave the handle in the center if I cut the rest of the back off of it. That way I can still use my lock cylinder as a lock and retain the look of the manual crank but use a 3/8 ratchet to move the window up and down. From what Ive seen on the net buying another handle is a waste because it will just do the same thing the last one did. It is hard to believe that they couldn't come up with a better system from the start.

As far as I can tell, I'm not missing anything except the lock cylinder. I open the crank like you normally would, it's just not attached to anything. Then I insert my extension & ratchet and crank. If you casually walked up to it and tried to open it, you would probably just think it's a broken handle. But when folded up it looks normal.
 
Got the manual cranked fixed, took the Ideas I had and campfire's photos and came up with this solution. No more pot metal to break.

Friday some parts came in. I bought new run channels for the tailgate glass, new glass sweeps for the tailgate and new weatherstripping for the topper. Got the new parts installed in the tailgate and started on some much needed rust repair. Didn't get to removing the topper yet, that will be for another day.

Every Blazer I see around here with a manual window has a broken crank.

Well I got the topper back on the old girl. Hopefully she want leak. This week I am ordering the sweeps and felt for the door windows, I'd really like to get this done before the rain starts.
