'90 K5 - The Nevada Blazer [Post 1437: School me on alternators)

So I finally decided to get a smart phone. It came with a vehicle dock that suctions to the windshield, and holds strong enough to withstand some seriously rough rides. I bought Backcountry Navigator and downloaded some maps to use on our Christmas Tree hunt this year, and it works excellent as a GPS. So, then I decided to get an auxiliary power port that will turn on with the ignition to power the phone. I'll install that tomorrow, pending the weather allowing me to do so (we're supposed to get 1" of rain tomorrow.)

Since my stereo was stolen, I used the phone's speaker for some tunes on the tree hunt and realized how much I've been missing music over the last 10 months or so. Thus, I went to a stereo store today to see what a cheap head to unit would run. I wasn't real excited about anything they had, and figured anything I bought stood a good chance of getting stolen because they were all so flashy looking. So I checked the auto parts store to see if they had anything really basic.

Well, I found a tape deck unit with an auxiliary input that was on clearance for $9! :woot: So I bought it and put it in. It essentially looks like something that would come stock, so no one is likely to take it. I only want a radio and aux input anyway, so it couldn't be any more perfect for what I need.

I'll get a pic tomorrow after I get the aux power installed. Should be pretty slick. I'm really excited about it.

In other news : I'm working on a plan to get suspension seats for the truck. I'm leaning towards the PRP Enduro Reclining seats, but am concerned about them not having bolsters that are as aggressive as I'd like. Trying to find a local dealer who has models in stock, but I'll probably buy thru DIY4x because he quoted me an unbeatable price, with seat heat and adjustable lumbar support. I'm very excited about this too, because I think it will greatly increase my wife's comfort, which means she might enjoy wheeling again. The service roads in NV are SO rough, they're bound to rattle your bones loose.

Most of the reclining race seats I've seen don't have nearly as much bolstering on the sides as the normal, non-reclining ones.

Jagged had that radio in his F150 and liked it.

Used Dual stuff for the last 5 or so years. Like it. Value priced and works with lots of good features.

Yep, have to have music no matter what. I put a whole system with subs and all in mine. Love it. Overkill you say..... Certainly, but its enjoyable when we are sitting out and about.

Love the Blazer btw

You know I was looking at that radio and thinking, that looks an awful lot like a stock one, obviously diminishing your robbery chances. Which is a great idea, but the USB would catch my eye if it was me doing the robbing, just a thought. I ran mine like that and over time the cable got sawed down, so I had to buy a new one. I ended up finding one that is 5ft long, so now I can set it on the ground from out the door or on the hood for easy changing if I am outside the truck for whatever reason.

Edit, but I see what you did with it there, great idea. I probably wouldnt worry to much, I always leave mine plugged in and wrapped around the 4wd lever.

They should make head units with an auxilary input in the rear so you could "hard wire" a port for your device(s).

That was actually an option on one I had several years ago. My first Dual brand actually. Came with a white wire that plugged into the back of your stereo and was meant for the iPod.

If more people used that common sense approach to life and things like this, the world would fall into chaos as everything would make to much sense. I find it hard to believe some "brilliant" radio designer guy hasnt lit up the conference room with this revelation.

I dearly wish for my AUX cables to run out the back, but I want my USB port that I have in the front so I can hook up something in there, when I figure out what I can hook up in there.

I have seen these to, my Pioneer has one, but it is a baseball diamond shaped plugin only available through Pioneer and it only goes to an Ipod. On top of that its 40$. I personally dont like the Iphone, so I wont buy that little one use only cord. Thats why I like AUX cables, they hook up Ipods, Droids, and I can use ITunes and stuff like MP3s and Pandora.

There are a lot of ones with rear Aux. Something i look for in new head units, for sure.

There is an adapter that allows you to use the rear cd changer inputs as aux on the old Sony's, too.

Haha, doesnt surprise me. My Pioneer can run 3 amps out of it, all setup for 3 different settings in the headunit, I can talk through my phone on it, have my phone's phonebook programmed into it, it can probably start my truck and activate the anti gravity boosters I have installed, but it has no AUX in its rear end. Well now I know Im picking up the wrong kinds. It seems all good headunits take an AUX in the rear.

Most "decent" stereos nowadays have from and rear aux inputs and a usb connection. I love the usb as I load up a thumb drive with a ton of mp3s and use the stereo to scroll through what I want to listen to. Its a lot easier than messing with my phone while driving.

The radio that was stolen had a rear aux input. I wish this one were that way too, but I'm not complaining since it cost me $9! :haha: Plus, nobody's going to be stealing this POS. :D I prefer using the phone to scrolling through the music via USB because I can just click on the music I want rather than having to read a scrolling screen. The car audio place told me that they're starting to move away from aux inputs on stereos because Bluetooth connectivity is so much more convenient.

Even when that radio isn't on sale, it still only costs $45. I put one in the old man's 1976 C65.
