Here are pics of my firewall and glove box.

Yeah I'd like to rip as much of that stuff off there as possible. The heater is internal correct? I'd like to put my battery up there.

Most of the heater is on the inside but the blower would still be outside in the same spot. Also, the heater hoses come thru at the same spot. I closed all my holes up because I intend to eventually install a Mohave heater unit. The alternative would be a factory heater only box that's a good bit smaller than the a/c box but still may interfere with a battery box.

I'll take some pics this weekend of my battery box and where I mount it.

Nice build man, i was wondering what the deal with the jeep steering shaft? from what i cansee it has like a mini u joint instead of the rag joint? whats the pros and cons?

Cons are that it cost me $9 and wasn't free. Pros are it's not a rag joint and it is nearly a bolt in.

Tightens up worn rag joint steering shaft alot.

Before my truck was running I pushed/pulled it around the yard and the sloppy rag joint always felt like soft, like it was about to break. After installing the XJ shaft the steering has been much tighter, it doesn't feel soft and sloppy any more.

I really hate that I've waited until building this truck before doing crossover and the XJ shaft, I never thought I really needed those upgrades on my old truck. Those two have made a dramatic difference in the way this one feels compared to my old push/pull steering truck.

Didn't get much done today because of work but I did install my new battery box on the firewall.

Here's the box, it came from Artec Industries

Here it is mounted to the firewall along with some more undercoat over my hole patches. Now I need new battery cables for the truck and winch.

I read through the whole thing, man it looks tough with the H1s and the SXs, nice setup, I like it. Good job!

Thanks :thumb:

Honestly, I like the H1's but I've really had the itch lately to convert it back to SRW with some Weld wheels. I'd have to get some Stauns or probably some Inner Air Locks but I think it sure would perk up the overall look. I most likely wont because I can't find a set of wheels like I want.

What really need to be saving my pennies for (instead of wheels) is fuel injection. I'm really afraid that with the carb it's going to be a trail plug.

Now if I just had your motor...

I hear you, I had been wanting that motor for years. Did you notice I had the block for 5 years before I built the motor? Took a while to save up.

Also, I want EFI now too, I don't like my engine wanting to die on steep hills when I need my power steering and brakes. I had a Truck Avenger carb, idled great on the hills, but with no high speed air bleeds the A/F curve was way off, lean down low and rich up high, it sucked. Couldn't tune it out either. The engine probably gained 50 horse when I put the other Holley on there and the 50 cc acc pump, but now it wants to flood out on steep hills.

I'm jealous of your 43" tires though, so much ground clearance. I only have puny 36s.

By the way, tell me you at least hooked up the + cable of your battery after the pic? :waytogo:

Oh yeah :D My daughter took that pic while I was reinstalling the battery. Still gotta go have new cables made, the winch cables are way too short and the engine cables need to change as well.

Just a frustration update...

I've been chasing some valve noise and complete lack of power so TARussell came over this weekend and helped me. Actually, I watched while he adjusted the valves. We found a few things...

#1) 2 rockers were hitting the valve covers so that appears to have been the major top noise I was hearing. I had not noticed the marks on the cover before, easily fixed.

#2) This is the second motor the roller rockers have been on and they are showing wear. Looks like it'll always have some chatter until I replace them (kinda sounds like an injector click).

#3) The truck has no power, this is a 454 w/ 5.86 gears it should feel a little peppy even if it's not a wild motor. To get it where it starts and runs decent the timing mark is way off the scale, it appears the balancer may have slipped (it also wobbles a little). I have a new balancer on the shelf so I'll be swapping it on soon.

#4) It still has a noise deeper in somewhere. Maybe a light wrist pin tap. great.

I'm so frustrated right now I could set it on fire... My major mistake on this build has been the motor, it's the only part of the entire truck myself or TARussell didn't have a hand in. I horse traded for the built assembly from a friend because it was cheaper than building another from scratch. It was supposed to have been a healthy rebearing'd/rering'd 454 with reworked heads, a cam & intake. All indicators now are pointing to a not so healthy motor. I'm going to run it until it pops but I will start collecting parts to build new *different* motor and be done with this pos.

My wife loves wheeling and big trucks but she's joke occaissionally about selling it all and buying 4wheelers for everybody. Doesn't sound so bad right now... :(

your so close man! get the thing going and take it out wheeling! once you got everything like you want then figure out the motor. if your thinking FI then maybe start thinking about a 6.0 swap down the road. then you will be VERY happy

I'm not giving up yet, just venting. I am a diehard big block lover but the late model 6.0 type swap sure sounds good. Unfortunately, I'm buried way to deep in some of my bbc stuff to scrap it. :doah:

I was about to do some stuff with the Dodge (level it, rear air bags and bigger tires) but I may need to redirect that money towards the K5 motor. We'll see...

I know the feeling! I really wanna do some stuff to my dmax but I keep holding off till i get further along on the red truck :doah:

Sorry to hear about your frustrations. I was thinking about ya this weekend, buddy had a jeep with a cam lobe missing:eek1: . swapped it out now its all better; hope you dont have to go that far:doah:

#2) This is the second motor the roller rockers have been on and they are showing wear. Looks like it'll always have some chatter until I replace them (kinda sounds like an injector click).

This is pretty normal for roller rockers, every rolller rocker equiped engine I have heard makes some ticking, kind of like it has a mechanical cam. They have more moving parts, and they click/tick. If you call the company I bet you they tell you it's normal too. Now if the roller bearing centers are loose, or the tips are too loose, then that's different. But if they are tight and making noise, no problem, you'll have to be the judge.

I hope the balancer fixes it. You could always use a piston stop screwed into the spark plug hole to find true TDC as well. Just make sure you remove the rockers from that #1 cylinder before you do it to be sure the valves don't run into the piston stop.

What is your cam and your converter? The 5.86 gears should definitely make it peppy, but it might not come alive until after it get's moving if the cam duration is too high for your converter, which I wonder from hearing that bad boy cackle in your video! :waytogo:

#4) It still has a noise deeper in somewhere. Maybe a light wrist pin tap. great.

I hope it's nothing and it runs forever. My father used to have a Caprice when I was in school, that had a deep tick, like a wrist pin or something, did it for 10s of thousands of miles, and it never went away or got any worse, he sold it that way too.

Thanks Heath, I hope the balancer is the issue. I may try the piston stop, that could save a lot of work if the current balancer turns out to be ok.

Here's my cam (no converter, it's a 4spd truck) -

I'm going to run it for now and keep trying to work the bugs out but I've decided to go ahead and start collecting parts for another motor. I've got a 4 bolt block and a steel crank tucked away so sometime in the next couple of weeks I'll have them checked over to see where things need to go from there.

Well your duration of 226 @ .050 is not too bad all, more mild than I expected, and I'm a dumb @$$ for not looking to see that you have a manual trans. I see why your truck cackles so much though, that is a tight lobe seperation at 108, especially for 226 duration. I hope everything works out for you and the motor is fine, but it sounds like you got the itch to build your own either way! :thumb:

One other thing, you said you had loose rockers, they don't keep getting loose do they, as in the new cam is going flat? I sure hope not.
