91 Suburban V2500 - Tow/Weekend Rig - Build Thread

Got a check engine light off and on, forget the codes, but O2 related. Going to try a new sensor, and hope its not the sensor being in a different location that is causing the problems.

Are you running the stock O2 or a Heated 3-wire O2? If you are funning the stock O2, it may not be getting hot enough with the headers. I highly recomend a 3-wire if you swap it out.

I have heard of these, but don't really get it. I understand the other 2 wires heat it. What trucks did these come in stock? Same size/threads as mine?

Easy as wiring up a heating circuit?

They are very generic across dozens of cars and trucks. I think that they came in 1993 Chevy trucks if you are looking for a specific reference. Look for a O2 sensor out of any truck from that era and if it is a 3-wire, then it will work.
I think that pretty much all O2 sensors have the same threads.
For wiring: The new sensor will have a signal wire of one color and two wires that are the same color. The signal wire goes to your stock purple wire. On the other 2 wires, one goes to ground, the other gets a switched 12v.

Really, going to try a replacement on the stock, as my stock is under warranty. If that doesnt' work, ordering one from TBI chips + the adapter harness to cut down on splices.

its funny dhcomp, you and i are building the same rig lol, i just installed the flowtechs monday, you could have inserted a quarter in the cracks of my manifolds, and my brakes are acting strange also, i think i have a master or booster going out, same problem as you, just got to get the time now to figure it out

Really, with a power bleeder, master/booster wasn't that bad.

Let me know if you need to chat about the procedure.

Very Nice 91'! That year was always the sweet spot for a 3/4 ton! Old body but with the 4 speed auto.......

I couldn't find a 3/4 ton so found a 1/2 ton and lifted a few inches. I sold this many years ago but was a great truck!

Now have the 04' 2500 with the 8.1....love it!

Sorry about the BU'........:haha:

Spoken like a true Mastercraft owner. You must be a member of TT!

Oh a side note, my 91 is gonna have to start pulling this.

Wow, quite the upgrade Tim!

You guys have to understand, i WAS a mastercraft guy for years. We had a grey 84 stars and stripes, then a red 98 Prostar 190 with the LT1.

As a tournament driver, i get a lot of seat time in brand new boats, and Just haven't been impressed with their build quality and fit and finish anymore, so it was time to get a malibu!

Yep.....TT member (ski-me). Thought about changing my name over here to same one but haven't made the jump.

Love our 94' 205! Our first boat so I wanted the best ski wake possible and the 94' was the one. Also wanted the LT1 so was a little difficult to find but it paid off. I wouldn't say the "magenta" was my first pick but my wife pointed out "you have 3 girls" so it's OK!

After reading about so many issues on new boats, I'm delighted with my older one. Runs like a top and the wake is arguably close to the 04' 190 I skied behind a few weeks ago. I'm hoping I can get the Blazer to run reliably enough to tow it but for now, the sub does the work. What a great truck that sub has been!

dhcomp, I see you also have a 540i....that must be a fun car to drive! My dad had some 533's and 535's many years ago....what a joy to drive those things! OK on the Bu'......I have my boat serviced at the local Bu' dealer vs. the MC dealer. Huge difference in service!! Sometimes that MC atittude gets in the way.

I will say this, MC is so far behind in electronics it isn't even funny. Hell it took until the 2010 model to get an in dash computer system to handle all of the stuff. Malibu and Tige and have been after it for years now. It looks like there is some major improvements coming in 2011 for the MCs.

The 06 X30 is a major upgrade for us and I'll be honest, it's the wake surfing that is driving this purchase. I was happy in my 92 until I started trying to surf behind it. I had to "over" weight it to get anything even half was decent to surf and it was just to hard on the boat. The only trouble is I've not sold my 92 so one of them is gonna have to be out in the open, with a tarp on it, for the winter. Try and guess which one that will be, lol. :haha:

Nice. Totally agree with the surfing. I'm a slalom guy at heart, but if i'm on open water, i'm surfing. The old x30 surfed great, i'm sure the new one does too. Surprisingly, with 6-8ppl, and the wedge, i'm always surprised how well my response surfs. Have added extra ballast, but it doesn't really help noticeably.

From driving so many new MC's, i'm really not impressed with the build consistency. I've driven some AWESOME ones, that jsut drive perfect, but they were also "specially" made for some of the top drivers in the country. The "regular" production MC's ive driven have either been really good, or really bad. Lots of rattles in boats with less than 5 hrs, etc.

Anyways, enjoy the new boat!

Ok, so more on the truck.

Warrantied out my Bosch 02 sensor, and don't seem to be having any more check engine light issues. Hopefully this keeps working.

After less than 1000 miles on the new headers, the supplied gaskets blew out. Back to my old familiar exhaust leak.

Replaced with remflex gaskets, heated it up good, then tightened again. Hopefully i have as good of luck with these gaskets staying sealed as Scott has.

Had to rebleed brakes AGAIN. Tried to get a suspected brake line leak to seal, we'll see how it goes. Will have to bring in some help, or a pro to diagnose this 2 month 'Brake pressure leak down" that i've been experiencing if it isnt' fixed this time, cause I know its not safe to have brake leaks.

Had a deal lined up to pickup a 10bolt/14ff combo in the 4.10 flavor, but guy disappearance. Still on the lookout for a cost effective way to swap to 4.10's and a 14ff.

Need to replace all steering link joints, but waiting for my bank account to recover a little from my summer spending.

Blower motor started freaking out, and not running at full speed off and on, so for $20, i just threw a new one in there. Made sure to clean-up all grounds too. Wasn't about to try and save $20 and end up with no A/c when its been 100 out.

Besides those issues, truck has been doing its job recently!

Really need to get better pics of exhaust work.

Well, took the beast on a quick trip down to Lemoore for the day this weekend.

350ish miles, round trip. First flat, fast, unloaded trip i've taken in months. Had never really tried to calculate my mileage with these tires.

Impressed how dead on my speedo is. Ran GPS for Odometer, and was within 2-3 miles over 350 total. Tired to accelerate slowly most of the trip, and cruised down I5 in the 80mph range most of the time. Total damage: 12.2mpg :(

Yes, i know, 80 isn't its most efficient speed....but i did significantly better on the stock tires. But on that same note, if i didnt' recal my speedo for the 33's, and its dead on now, it must have been wrong with the 235/85's.

Regardless, need to look into getting my CAT replaced, think that is probably a faulty component right now.

Anyways, just a quick update! Truck ran like a top other than the ****ty mileage.

You already mentioned that 80 is a bad speed to calculate mileage in these beasts... I didn't keep the numbers that I had recorded, but it was a SUBSTANTIAL difference between 65 and 80mph.

Force of drag (in a fluid) is proportional to the square of velocity. Turns out that with these Chevy "bricks"... anything over 65 gets VERY high drag force. Mods for better efficiency won't overcome it. Prob not telling you anything you don't already know.

That said, bigger tires won't help unless you've got an inefficient gear ratio... and a backed up cat is always gonna screw ya up.

Yep, agreed. Never said it was a good time to test mileage due to speed....it was just convenient.

Hey I just read all this thread must say nice truck. I noticed that you have 4 switches next to your ash tray. Window, A/C, Heat, and Defrost. On the burbs I've only seen rear heat if they had barn doors. Did you add it special to your truck? Also with the defrost, how does that work? Does it have the wires running across the back window? I would like to add these features to my burb gotta have those creature comforts lol.

Some of the tailgate 'burbs had rear defrost from the factory. I had a wrecked '88 that had it on there. Yes, they have the lines across the glass and had connections off the bottom corners of the glass inside the tailgate.

Bingo! And....it barely works.

As for rear heat, i was under the impression it was a standalone box in the cargo area, that is long gone from mine. No idea what it looked like.
