91 Suburban V2500 - Tow/Weekend Rig - Build Thread

I have been wanting a truck like that for a long time. But i just dont think there is anyway in todays world i could get myself to own a big block that wasnt just a sunday cruiser. The vortec 350's seem to get decent millage and power on the other hand.

The 6.0L is kinda known to get the same or worse mileage than the 454 (7.4L), which is pretty silly....
My dad's 00 K2500 with the 6.0L and the 4L80E got 15mpg and that was an extended cab short bed. Was pretty consistent but he's the stereotypical slow driving older guy. Wasn't reefing on it.

I did that.

Can't wait to get home today. Truck is going to get some attention, too frustrated with the 99

Should at least know what I broke in the column, and hopefully can run a compression test, and check the slack in the timing chain.

It's back!!!

After figuring out the rotor in the new distributor melted, swapping to a good msd unit was easy. New wires too. Fired right up!

Also put a bolt through the old (broken) damper in my XJ shaft.

Was going to run that til i could weld it, but decided to hold off.

Used the tip from another member, and cut an eyebolt to weld around the damper/shaft gap. Eastwood welder shows up tomorrow:woot:

Hot date tmr night, but should be welded up and back on the road Wednesday night.

Test run up to Tahoe Friday/sat, then up to shasta to drag a boat back on sunday!

Stoked that its almost there!

Awesome to hear man! So glad thats all it ended up being!

Yah, no big deal. I just bought a new truck in the process :doah:

Hopefully something didn't cause the old rotor to melt.

Ran it for a good hour in the driveway tonight though, no issues so far.

This MSD distributor came with some good cam break-in grease to use on the gear....i ran the other one dry.

So what could cause the rotor to melt or break? Other than manufacturing defects?

Just curios as my buddy has a '98 S10 and he's had all kinds of missing/stumbling issues and it stopped running all together a while back. He pulled the dizzy cap and the new rotor we had installed a few months ago had the tab completely broken off. WTF?

NO idea. Hoping it was mainly Crappy parts....

Regardless, I'm sure glad you got it figured out and working and that it wasn't anything over expensive like a new truck!! j/k about that last part.

With spring here, I'm glad you got it running so you can get on the water.

My commute just got shortened to less than a mile, so need to find a good time to road test is.

Supposed to be helping someone drag a boat home from shasta thsi weekend (4+ hrs) ,so need to get some road time in first!

Do you plan on keeping the 99 still just for the heck of it?

There is no longer any method to my madness. I got pissed, listed it as Buy it Now on ebay for what i paid....and am awaiting payment.

No harm no foul if you get what you paid. :waytogo:
Definitely lost some cash in the transaction in travel / repairs, but really....just gonna be happy to get out of it. Was supposed to be reliable...and it hasn't been. Rather kick it down the road, and keep working on the rest of my stuff. Have a list of about every car my family owns that needs my attention in the next week or 2, glad that this one should be gone.

That sucks about the new truck man, but I'm glad you are getting this one figured out! I love this thing

bummer, man. I think those are a good generation of rigs. yours must have been an exception. Mine (knock on wood) is doing its DD/work duties excetllently- minus mileage, but i can't expect from a big block in stop and go traffic with a trailer anyways.

anyways, are you going to look for another one?
