97 sas'sy Sierra/ 80 Cheep 10: tales of a phat block

Went for a couple loads of wood yesterday, was fun getting around in the 18" of snow we have. I havent seen this much before christmas time in years.

Messed around with my photo editor for kicks:

Out of the deep freeze......finally

Well it finally got warmer than -40 deg Celsius this week, so I figured Id fire er up. We've gotten 4 feet of snow this year, so going thru the fields/ditches is pretty well impossible. I managed to find a drifted in road to attempt.

A few hundred feet into the road, and my fan relay wasnt making contact/fans didnt cut in. So I shut er down for a minute.

On another note, I plated the truck as an antique. Its finally thirty years old :woot:

At least there isnt a lack of snow for sledding though:

I want some deep snow to wheel in....just ain't happening this year (again)
looks like fun, cept for that -40 part!

Well took the truck out to a buddy's place, did some light snow wheelin. My e'fans wouldnt work again, so after some diagnosing we figure the control module i got crapped out. So for a back up, we wired them in on a switch. Made it so they plug right into the module, so now I have a good back up if it ever happens again. Going to pick up another module on warranty atleast :waytogo:

While I was messin around, figured Id black the grill/bezels out. Wish I would have done it a long time ago. On another note, looks like this grill didnt have the mounts for park lights, so somebody have just glued the broken chunks out of the appropriate grill :haha:

Ive been trying to find this mystery rattle my motor has, it seems to happen at low rpm under light load and random times. I think ive chased it down to the distributor, so guess thats the next thing to look at :dunno:

Yeah, that's an '81-'82 grille. They use bumper mounted turn signals.

Those old grilles are so brittle by now that if you take the park lights off and put them back on one or two times, the mounts will just disintegrate. Mine are barely hanging on. Your grille does look better. I went from gray to black on mine last year and it looks way better now. If only the paint would quit flaking off.

Yeah I had probs with my k5 flaking off when I did it, but I just gave er a touch up everyonce in a while. Seemed to do the trick.

I stole a couple of those little paint markers from work and put them in my golve box. Everytime I see a bald spot, I reach in there and get them out and go to work. :D

what sucks is when you have the right grill for the 81 with the bumper signals, and someone replaces the bumper for a different year, and now you have no turn signal provisions. just bulps flopping around at the end up the wiring... :doah:

truck looks great btw. i'm digging the stripe on the grille. wish i wouldve seen that before yesterday when i painted my grille.

So what about the mystery rattle in the engine? You said were down to the distributor, so I assume you've already replaced the plugs and wires. That would have been my first guess anyway. It may be time for a new cap and rotor. Also, what about some good ol' fuel treatment/water remover? That seems to make my old engine run better when it's been just stumbling or rattling a little. There could be some moisture in the fuel, especially since you haven't been driving it too much with the deep snow. Maybe it just needs to be driven a little bit. Surely the new paint on the grille has helped it run a little better already.

Did cap/rotor/wires/ Re curve kit, also changed distributors as the original one was all seized/ just plain worn out. The Dizzy I put in looked in good shape,I took the cap off and checked everything out. All seemed okay, other than seems like an excessive amount of up/down movement of the shaft.

Doesnt seem like a rod or something of the like otherwise it would do it all the time. Its just odd that its intermittent like that.

I know its not a fuel related problem.

Maybe I need to throw some more stickers at it? :thumb:

Yeah I figured leaving the chrome strip in the middle would break it up a bit, looks pretty slick I think :pimp:

So we're playing Jeopardy with your truck now huh? :haha:

Wait, what's that sound? A Daily Double!!

What is... a rod knocking that's about to bust through the block??

Meh, a rod coming out to say hello isnt as fun as Gone in 60 Seconds makes it out to be. Been there, done that. But it does make for an excellent picture and story to tell. Especially when its not your vehicle.

I would think dizzy for the rattle, some sort of spark knock. Happens, water in the fuel could be it as well. I use Heet twice a year in mine as our humidity is nonsense here in the rust belt. And replacing gas tanks brings the suck when I could be buying other more horsepower parts instead.
