'99 4 Door Tahoe SAS Build, Taking it back a few years

Looking really good. I bet the other crease will pound out cleanly with a scrap 2x4 section as your dolly.

David

So, standing here in the front of the Tahoe this afternoon I decided that I was finally through with the crooked, bent, unnecessary, mall crawler dual steering stabilizers to make way for the upcoming hydro assist. I put them on there initially because I felt that the original H1 military wheels and tires that I ran were so heavy and out of balance that there was sure to be death wobble. Well, The build beyond that now.

Now the plan here is hydro assists, and in doing that fix the leaking steering box that's making a mess of the underside of the Tahoe. But I found a new, and should have been expected, problem.

Bent tie rod!! So a call is happening this next week to ORD about high steer options with the hydro assist. We'll see were the cost lands and if it fits the budget, but it might be the rought I need to go.

Two things:

What are you going to do with the stabilizers?

And I would get one of ORD's tie rods first, they're super beefy, and I don't think you'll have the room for high steer being as low as your truck is.

Got no plan for the stabilizers I removed. The center bracket is bent and a couple of the u bolts were missing. This last trip to Moab pretty much took them out. With hydro assist installed, I shouldn't need the stabilizer anymore.

And you are right. ORD's tie rod may be the initial route. My current bent tie rod is the stock Ford that came with the axle. So no doubt their set up is stronger.

If you go high steer with Ford knuckles they have a tendency to break off. So plan on a reinforcement kit or just stay low steer.
With the hydro the stabilizers are not needed. Hydro is one of the easiest and best mods to do.

Hey Chad stop using my name in vain!

I doubt anyone on this board has spent $450 on their hydro assist.

I think I am into mine like $120 maybe.....

450 dollar hydro assist is for guys who don't want to do any research and like shiny parts. A buddy just did it for 170. Which included hoses, a different steering box to tap, 2 taps, ram, tabs to weld on. Whole shebang. Use your own steering box and 150 is what your looking at.

Plus it actually does something.

I'm with the rest of the fellers. I was a little less motivated to do research, and I only paid $250.

was it shiny? I think I got ripped off.

@4door99 you might want to check out West Texas Offroad, they rebuilt and ported my box. They also sell kits that include the ram, tabs, fittings and hoses.

Mine was a Trail Gear kit. Got it at dealer pricing, so basically free shipping.
