Anti-Theft Devices You Use...

Mine has sat for three years unlocked with the keys in the cupholder. However, it smokes so badly that if the crook managed somehow to get it running, I'd call the cops and tell them to be on the lookout for a blue and white Blazer smoking like a chimney:crazy: I don't worry in this town, I went on vacation once and left the window down and the radio in it. My Yukon I lock no matter what and have a magnet on my keychain that connects to a switch in the steering column that kills the fuel pump if not put in the right spot. So you have to have MY keys to make it run, and no crook will figure that one out.

All these kill switches and electric trickery are cool and will keep the truck from getting stolen (probably), but like I said before, the thieves are still going to damage your ride by breaking into it and tampering with it. That's why I'm all about using visible physical barriers like locks and fences, removable steering wheels, etc.

It's easy, and cheap too. Simply cut the wire that feeds power to the fuel pump relay (under the hood,) splice in one lead from this product, run that to the underside of the steering column, secure it, run the other lead to the other end of the pump relay wire, and voila! Instant immobilizer. Since it's solid state, it can't easily be tampered with either. I learned this trick while I lived in South Africa, where a car can disappear with a club, gear lock, and the immobilizer. But it sure is a deterrent.:D
 
Will the Grant disconnect work with a stock steering wheel?
 
What model of Grant Steering Wheel are you running that is removable? Does your horn work with your wheel?

Model #748 but I believe it works on most if not all of Grant's wheels...got everything from Summit...except the column lock, my mother in law is a locksmith and had that sitting in the back of her shop...that was a freebie. And yes the horn still works.

As far as using a stock wheel I don't know. Would have to check with Grant on that.

My steering wheel fit perfectly into my Tuffyproducts Deluxe console too so I didn't even have to carry it around. Just locked it up inside the console. Takes a couple of minutes to lockup when I get to work but it's worth it, knowing that unless they happen to have a tow truck with them no thief is getting my ride again.
 
I work at a car audio shop and two-way alarms are great. A two way alarm with keyless entry, a back up battery for the alarm system and if you want it to be loud run relays to multiple sirens. One day I wanna weld up my key holes and rely on the keyless to prevent them from getting in to begin with, if they break a window the shock sensor will pick it up and send a signal to the remote in my pocket which will beep at me. Even better they make two way alarms that call your cell phone via satellite so pretty much unlimited range is achieved... I have expensive stereo equipment so preventing the break in is more important then preventing the whole car from being driven off....
 
I know this thread is a little old, but I was asked again how I keep my K5 from getting stolen. First I live in Nevada and I know my neighbors and they know me and anyone screwing with my stuff when I'm not around will get run off if their lucky. Secondly this is nearly free and works for all vehicles:

How about a switch on the clutch sensor for those of us with standard transmissions?
 
When I lived in town, I had a combo of:
- Disconnected battery
- Double low range w/ rear end disconnected and front hubs locked (so that turning would be nearly impossible and top speed would be 15mph unless they figured out how to run 4 shifters),
-The tranny shifter pulled out of the socket,

And it usually had 2 or 3 flat or nearly flat tires.


Now that I'm out of town I've not only got all of those things done to it, but it's chained to a trailer with a coupler lock and a vehicle parked in front of it most of the time, and it's got a broken front driveline.... lol :)
 
Bear in mind that the Digikey switch is Not solid state. Its really really long life, but it does have a moving part that will eventually break.
I have used them a lot for covert operating things, and I like them. But I have had one fail.

A certain group of folks in this area have a switch hidden under the floor carpet way up high under the dash where your foot does not usually reach.
It is hooked to a relay that latches electrially when the switch is pressed with the ignition on.
To crank the car, you turn on the key either while pressing on the switch, or press the switch as soon as you turn it on.
The nice thing about it, is that the movement is so natural that someone riding with you never sees it.
Therefore the word never gets out about it.
Of course, you have to have a vehicle with carpeting on the floor. Or at least a floor....

a kill switch would be prudent but that won't stop a tow truck or someone with a repo tow set up! This seems like the best option http://www.getisight.com/

you could set the parameters so that if your truck even moves you will get a text! if you have a phone that can go online you log on and get real time tracking info!

then you grab the XD40 with 2 10 round clips out the hidy place and go for a "Drive" :wink1:

I remembered this thread when i came across these diagrams and thought id post em. im gonna try the stereo one.



This is a stand alone starter kill. It does not rely on an alarm or keyless entry for it to work, only a simple momentary contact switch (normally open) to deactivate it. Every time the ignition is turned off, continuity is broken on the starter feed wire. To disable (or start), turn ignition on, then press the hidden switch, then start as normal.

You can substitute the switch with a number of others devices such as the amp turn on wire of your head unit. Be sure to isolate it with at least a 1 amp diode. Turn the key to the run position. Allow the head unit to come on or turn it on. Now start the vehicle. If you connected to the power antenna wire, make sure the tuner is on. If you have a pullout or detachable face head unit, your vehicle will not start without it.

I used a hidden battery kill, as well as a under dash ignition switch. Still had to turn key to get it out of park tho. I also like a mini weiner dog to alert me.

Then I use my Colt 1911.

It was good enough to be used in 4 wars, could punch a hole through enemy helmets, and isnt some pansy gun with 3 different safety's, or has a bullet measured in that foreign millimeter crap.
 
I used to leave the doors unlocked until a year or two ago when there was a rash of cars being looked through in the area. It was only the unlocked cars, and other than a neighbors purse being stolen, nothing turned up missing. They got into mine once or twice, so now they just get locked.

You would have to be brave to steal a vehicle from this town. There's a very good chance it will be noisy, and the owner is a hillbilly just waiting to shoot at something.
 
I had an 86 F-250 4x4 with a 460. Ford had what was called the "Hot Fuel" option on 84-86 carbuerated 460's. Instead of a mechanical fuel pump, the hot fuel option used two low pressure in-tank fuel pumps that were relayed through the oil pressure switch. When you started the engine, the "start" circuit would enable you to start the truck and when the engine reached 6 psi oil pressure, the "run" circuit would kick in and keep the pumps powered.

I eliminated the switch mounted on the engine and hooked the 2 wires up to a toggle switch under the dash on the firewall. Whenever I parked the truck, I would just reach up under the dash and flip the switch. If you tried to start it with the switch off, it would only run for 5 seconds at a time and then shut the fuel pumps off.

So easy and it didn't cost me a dime to come up with.
