Burnt burb resurrection (It's mine again!)

If you really have no spark that's a separate issue but this one clue alone makes me think it could be the IAC valve? Just something to check to make sure it's opening.

I have had coils go out in my regal and the first signs were it won't run at idle or low RPM, then as the coil gets hotter and shorts out worse it won't run at all.

this is why I went back to the original coil... figured my moroso was getting weak. Whats an IAC valve:dunno:

lets do process of elimination :
what have you checked so far and the results :
what have you replaced :
so that we (others are trying to help also ) can rule out somethings

start at post 720. its all in here.

rundown, Whole distributor + cap n rotor, new pickup coil and ignition module came installed. then put factory coil back in which worked fine when I pulled it out trying to add performance:rolleyes: still does it...

so far you have replaced the dist ,and the coil ,still having the same problems
start with the ground wires on the frame .bad grounds make electronics do bad things ,
start there see if anything changes .there is a ground off the fuel sending on the left side frame rail just above the rear tire .

will that affect spark?

Sounds to me like you need to find where your loose connection is.

Check your positive side:
Battery terminals - still side post? Possible rotted cables?
Junction at starter - Fuseable link good? No shorts? Tight Cables?
Firewall Junction block - exists? Everything snug and clean?
Alternator connections - all clean/tight?

Negative side:
Block to body ground strap - clean, good condition, tight?
Computer ground - clean, good condition, tight?
Negative battery cable? still side post? Possible rotted cables?

From there, i'd inspect every inch of factory wire coming into and out of the distributor / ign module.

With an intermittent issue like this, if you already have all new ign components, i'm going to guess its a wiring problem.

next step in components is the switch on the column. then its down to wires for sure. switch on the column has been at least out of adjustment for a while. I can tell cause sometimes on start up if im holding the key tight all the way forward itll turn over repeatedly with nothing, until I start to back the key off then it pops on.. jiggleing the key and banging on the column hasn't been able to prove that theory yet though

Definitely get this switch adjusted/changed. Its easy, cheap, and sounds like it may be the culprit.

The one in my old 83 pickup went bad on me and the one in my parents old Monza too... both acted weird on start up for quite a while before they affected running. its just the hardest , crappiest piece to change so I picked it last:doah:

Really?

I remember it being pretty easy. Just make sure to get it set/located/adjusted per procedure (that i dont' remember), and get the set screw nice and tight so it doesn't move.

its just the whole dropping the column and Dinkin around up under the dash part that I hate. I tried it once while everything was still attached on my 83 and it wasn't fun so I took it out and layed the whole thing on a table to do it.... I have a lot more patience now so ill try again lol.

also, My cruise has been messed up since tightening up my tilt so I need to get back under there any way I guess

Its a little tough, but I remember doing my last one in the vehicle, while i was on vacation somewhere :doah:

Not my favorite task, but definitely not worth pulling the column.
With the right parts, I'd guess its about a 30 min job.

I have a delco column switch coming. Hopefully that works... either way the things i'Ve changed were stuff i wanted to do anyway... It's my DD now so I cant wait for it to break to replace small parts like that.... I learned pretty quick why i always insidted on having a back up vehicle.... I sold my 05 CC less than a month ago:doah: now this....

my ignition switch is here.... but after looking it all over, i'll definitely have to at least drop the column from the dash.. its pretty much unreachable without:doah:

Are you sure? I cant remember if i changed it on my 91, but definitely changed it on my 94. I've never dropped a column in my life.

Isn't it just a mounting bolt on each end?

Just looked up pics. You can do it without dropping the column.

Pull all the trim lose, put a ratchet up there, and take it off.

You can do it!

theres a bracket of some sort too thick to bend that is running right over the mounting screws and I cant even get my hand in there to unplug it even. thats with the trim off and the AC duct removed. I took the 2 nuts that hold it up to the dash off and lowered the column some and still cant get to itenough to work on it :dunno:

switch didn't do it  :dunno: ive looked at all the wiring I can find and even used a stick to move a bunch of the wiring while its running,,,, No effect and all good..... ECM??

I had to drop the column... no choice. the switch went up all the way into the metal bracket at top. screws were nearly touching on the left.

I haven't followed close enough to say if i think its the ECM yet.

That being said, if you are convinced, the ECM is only $100-130 on rock auto. Not bad, if it fixes the problem.

I had a wierd stumbling issue, and at the end I needed an ECM.
