Burnt burb resurrection (It's mine again!)

Thank you. If it was still a little warmer and I wasn't in full swing paint mode on my house remodel I would have went through the steps and learned a little more to set up my carb and timing/advance. Plus I already learned how to wire up my TC lockup. But the guy at the shop knows me well and has more time than me, so he'll treat me right and do a great job.

Ultimately I still want a lockup controller for it at some point. But it can wait till spring

finally decided that it is truly fixed.... I have no idea what part of the injection system was the culprit..... my current guess is the only sensor I never changed and wish I would have :doah: 'the knock
sensor'. I couldn't find it at first, and gave up before I decided to look farther. That and the harness were the only things I never changed. runs now though.... and will let me drive it until a future motor swap. still on the fence with that one. MANY other things to do before I can think about it really. this only drives maybe 1000 miles a year when it IS running good, so carb'd will be fine for now. not what I want but keeps me from destroying it in a rage trying to figure it out lol. it did run AWESOME with the modded tbi for the few times it ran. Way better than it does carb'd. but is what it is now I guess.

If I get the chance in the future I want to do a 97-2000 vortech 350 with a size or 2 off stock cam and FAST fi. but with the house remodel, new baby, and a few things dealing with my aging parents, it may be a pipe dream...:dunno:

Cool. Have you been driving it regularly since we last talked?

Was at the shop for quite a while. Told the dude not to hurry so he let one of his younger guys attempt the TC lockup wiring. The owner had the tuning done in a few days, but 2 months later his guy handy ddone the lockup yet so I brought it home at no charge. On the way home I realized my heater core was worse (knew it was bad) so I havent driven it daily. But I've driven it short runs quite often every few days or so. Just sucks wiping the windshield all the time and smelling coolant lol. Plans for changing that in the works. Been too cold latley. Soon though :waytogo:

Still no heater core work lol... Don't need a heater now :) I found a complete running 97 5.7 vortech for $100. Going to slowly build it for the burb. Hopefully it's not in bad shape. As long as the block and heads are OK I'll be fine. Plan on a full rebuild

So...ditching the carb?

Eventually. I'll have a carb style intake on it so I can run my carb at first. Goal is to build it with FAST efi in mind for the future. Going to stay mild'ish and build for the highway. Most of the torque down low, dont really care what HP does above 5k... That sort of thing. Wish I could sell my denali somehow.... Get done a LOT faster lol.

Ok. What keeps you from selling the Denali? :dunno:

Oweing 5k more than its realistically worth :doah:. Books for close, but the real market is way off. I've debated taking the loss and sticking the difference on a credit card. The $500 a month payment would kill the card fast. But I just hate the idea of doing it.

Just because we're the same age dont mean we arent young dumb and full of stuff.:D Your only as old as you act right:rolleyes: I'm gonna be that way till a higher power puts the brakes on. You know, like if I end up with a wife or something:haha:

So....how is this statement treating you 5.5 years later? :haha:

Sorta slower now lol :D . Babies and women are expensive and time consuming..... totally worth it though :waytogo:

If I had quite a bit more money I'd still be going hard though lol... she likes working on the stuff with me when she can. And we're getting closer to having a place with my OWN shop to work in too lol... be a couple years yet.

As a side note to this thread.... I paid this truck off for the third time today :D. Feels good to know I actually own it free n clear again lol. With any luck it'll stay that way for a while too.

I have new motor in the planning stages right now. Need to pull it apart and see what it needs for internals... And I have to decide on a FI setup yet too.

Only reason I haven't hooked up the lockup converter yet is when I go FI again I was hoping the ecu for it would control the lockup...

My denali is officially going on the market in the next week or so. If it sells the burb will be my DD so some of the things I want to do may happen faster.....

by the end of the year I'll have cleared up $400 a month in bills and if I get the denali sold that's another $500 on top of it..... that'll move some things along lol. So far I'm estimating $5k to rebuild, bore, (stroke?), and aftermarket FI my vortec 350 that I picked up. May be less than that, but I'm figuring the extra that always pops up.

Flip side to that is for the same money I could have a 5.3/6.0 with a cam, tune and a rebuilt tranny......... I'll decide AFTER the denali is gone though.... right now my reasoning behind the vortec is its a simple weekend swap once it's ready. That'll help if it's my DD by then

Oh. Last time we talked I think you said you were going to leave the fuel system alone for a while. :haha:

Is it? If you're figuring a full engine rebuild, and you hafta convert back to yet ANOTHER fuel system, with a foreign ECM, why not simply grab the newer engine? Is the Vortec ECM significantly easier to wire than the LS harness?

P.S. - my favorite CR junkyard will give you any engine in the yard + any of the related accessories you want for your swap for $350 if you pull it ($550 if they do it). That's probably worth the hour's drive for you to go pick it up. :D

They have at least a few 5.3 trucks in stock. :deal:

I hate the carb lol. My mpg went to like 8 and even after a shop tuned/ timed it for me it still leaves a lot to be desired.... although I'm not really sold that they did a good job on it.
As for the harness, I'd have to modify and beautify an ls harness. The vortech would go in with my carb and then later have a self tuning FI system like a FAST or Holley setup added.
And really I kinda like the setup John has in his bobbed burb. He has a 383'd vortec with a FAST FI system and a full manual slapshifted 700r4. And gets tons of power with quite decent mpg for the size of his truck.
The ls motors seem intriguing, but every fricken one I've drive are rattle buckets that drive me nuts. Don't know why. But every one has been that way.... my 6.2 being the worst.
