I have had several square body Chevy's over the last 20 plus years, some have been drivers others have been wheeler's or projects that got completed and some that didn't. This one is my favorite so I thought I would share with you guys.

1987 Chevy M1028 CUCV 66500 miles at the date of purchase

-Dana 60 front with factory Lock Right locker 4:56 gears
-14 bolt rear with factory Detroit locker 4:56 gears
-TH400 transmission
-NP 208 transfer case
-6.2l Diesel
-6 inch lift
-35' BFG KM2 tires with 1000 miles on them.

This is the day I brought it home

First thing was new batteries and filters/fluids.

Then I started building a winch mount off the stock CUCV brush guard.

I like to use C.A.D. whenever possible.

Next came some military 37's

I wired in a light bar above the winch.

I had to make a little cage for the light bar to help keep it from walking away, I have had them stolen in the past.

Out enjoying a day at the dunes with my oldest daughter.

I got a new set of wheels and tires for it.

I am not a fan of lift blocks.

I bought some beadlocks and some Boggers from a friend. I sold them not very long after assembling them.

Here is my oldest daughter working on them.

I also picked up a M101A2 trailer for camping.

The guy I bought the trailer from had a 1009 sitting there rotting.

I got tired of not having a trail rig and I couldn't afford or justify buying something else so I decided to put a tube bed on it.

Everything is just tacked together here.

Fuel cell and tool box placement.

My daughter helping out again.

I got some cooling fans, One will be for power steering and the other for the transmission.

The lift springs didn't flex very good so I decided to do a shackle flip.

I like to carry extra fuel especially on long camping/wheeling trips so I made a fuel jug holder.

Mounting fans here.

Finally paint.

Compressor mounted and air lines plumbed.

I got the rear winch installed and wired.

Hi-Lift mounted.

Checking shock placement and making sure everything clears ok.

Next is covering all this up with some diamond plate.

I cut the diamond plate into 3 pieces so I can access the junk underneath easier.

My son doing some work.

I don't know if I mentioned or not but this is still my daily driver so it has to be 100% street legal. I found a trailer fender that was the perfect size. I cut it in half to make 2.

They are mounted to the spring plate and can be removed very quickly.

I took it on a shake down run.

Five minutes later we where on our way.

On the shakedown run the heater core started leaking and I by passed it but it really made me miss having easy access to my tool box. i decided to cut off the passenger side fuel jug mount and build and mount a tool box there. I like it much better. I will have my wife sew up a neoprene cover for it eventually. You can also see in this pic the rub marks on the tube work. The trails are really tight here.

I also mounted the steering cylinder for hydro assist.

I found a np241 dirt cheap, the planetaries out of this will be used for a NWF eco box

I finally got around to mounting my gauges, Much better than rolling around on the dash.

Cool shop pic

Nothing very exciting here. I decided to have my radiator rebuilt, it was showing signs of it's age.

Next we did a little camping, no hardcore wheeling this trip. Just some fire road fun.

I blew another tire off the bead, I really need bead lockss.

I bought a np205 seal kit and short shaft 32 spline input gear.

Some knuckle comparisons.

I swung by J.B. Fab and picked up some cable shifters and stainless shift shafts for the 205

np205 tear down and inspection.

All back together better than new.

I got the ECO box finally.

Pre adjusting the detentes and cables.

This thing is bad ass! I love it. I might have to copy your tube bed for my super duty some day. I have always wanted a square body Chevy just like this.

I built a rear support mount.

I had to cut up the cable shifter so it would fit under the floor in the stock shifter hole.

The shifter still needed to come up 2 inches to clear underneath so I made a box to space it up and hold the cable shifter.

I decided to switch all the motor/trans mounts over to poly

This is the skid plate I made.

how well did the winch mount on the original brushgaurd work out? tough enough? i can only assume it left the build when it became a plow?

It worked good, it was very solid. You are right when I started wheeling it I didn't want to ruin it so I took it off. I wish I could of kept it on because it looks really cool.
