Considering a Suburban Tow Rig

That's a good question. It had a semi float rear. Can the gear ratio be determined by vin?

I don't want to put anyone through the trouble. I liked it a lot, but it's not the right one. The van wasn't very clean underneath. I know this ones not new, but there was a big difference in the drive and handling from the new one I drove a few weeks ago.

There's another for sale by Swetty that looks promising. Also, I'm pretty sure I'd prefer an extended van after seeing a couple of them now.

Does anyone know what year Chevy started putting the real thick rubber coating on the frames as opposed to just the black paint?

Wow can already tell that one is way cleaner for the same price.

My 2000 Tahoe had that rubber crap. I think they went to the rubber stuff in the GMT800s. So '99/00+
It's kinda weird some frames the coating lasted a lot time, like my Tahoe, and others where it falls off in chunks, like my '12. :doah:

1 ton van should be a full floater. Get me the vin and I'll check for sure and get the ratio.

The crap on the frames are not rubber. It's a wax dip. They dip the frames prior to assembly. When new you can see the congealed drips on the bottom. Stuff scrapes off with a fingernail. Stays on there decent, but running over thick brush or tall grass will rub the stuff off the bottom. 800's started it, 900's have it and the K2x generation are done the same way. Pretty solid when cold, but don't touch it when it's hot outside. Stuff gets gooey when it's hot. Messy stuff.

Here is the vin. I definitely won't be going back for the orange one, so don't go out of your way to check it out.

That vans just seen a little too much abuse for me, but it's real close to what I'd like to get into.

Have you looked at the second one yet? From the ad it looks like a better deal...

Sorry got busy after I looked up the vin at work today. That vin came up as a 1 ton, but according to the parts catalog it has the 9.75" rear axle. Meaning, it's the 14 bolt semi floater. I don't have the order guide to look to know what dictated the full floater over the semi, but it's still a decent setup. That one is geared 3.73, unless Quigley re-geared it.

There seems to be a lot of misinformation online about gmt400 suburbans.

I've been trying to figure out what the differences are between a 1500 and 2500 and to the best of what I have learned lately, if you find a 6.5 1500 it is actually the same as a 2500 except for springs and possibly axle ratio.

Does anyone have more experience with these? Are all the frames the same?
