the way its built is to work the best . the boom / hoist unit needs to be positioned in such a spot to hold the load best . then the sling on the tail end cant be to far out or the angles of load will be all wrong . so this is why they got short in the rear .
not offten you see them like this anymore unless a survivor or reproduction of one .
if i run across the pics again there was a company in the new york / pa / new jersey area back in the 70-80 or newer possible . they did yellow chevy / gmc c-10-c-30 trucks like this and there is a lot of crash pics of them as towing back then was the wild wild west days . .
