CUCV mild usage build. Nothing radical here, move along now.

So...what are the plans? I thought you were keeping that axle. :dunno:

We are, however, we decided to add a little shim to it and get that caster angle a little more on the high side of the spec.

At the same time we're putting in some new steering link ends.

First time through, when we did the king pins, we didn't have time to get to the lower kingpin bearings so those will be replaced this time as well.

Axle is ready to go back in.

Found some fairly loose spindle nuts. Glad we dug into it when we did.

Its good to find something when a problem arises!
Jimmy should be much happier now!

Yep, I think so. He's Jonesin' to drive it again.

Got the axle back under it tonight but we're missing a couple things so we didn't quite get it finished up. Tomorrow night should be back on the road.

We did put an EZ inch under the front axle while we were in there to bump it up just a touch. Front end was a little bit low but might end up a little bit high now. We may end up doing an EZ inch in the rear to level things up.

Death wobble strikes again.... Or rather continues to strike.

We've rebuilt the kingpins, replaced the tie rod and ends, shimmed the axle to the high side of the caster angle, shimmed the king pin spring. We even went so far as to put a steering stabilizer back on.

No joy. Still death wobbles like crazy whey ya hit 30mph. IF you "drive through" the death wobble it will go away, but there is that hint in the steering wheel that it is still trying to oscillate. Then when you slow down it starts in again.

This is quite possibly the most stubborn case of death wobble I've ever run across.

We are going to try balancing up the tires an put the rears up front and vice versa. I'm not optimistic at this point.

If all else fails, we'll put on the hydraulic assist and be done with it.

I feel your pain....someone recommended to me to do hydro assist and be done with it!:pimp::bow::bow:

Yep, I remember that. Was thinking about how you were fighting the DW just last night and the fix ended up being the hydraulic assist.

I have a diff cover with the tabs on it ready to go along with a cylinder and tie rod clamp all matched up. All I really would need to add are some hydraulic lines.

Can you go springless designed arms?

I could and that would probably help however, I'm not sold on the springless arms for something that is street driven.

OH, forgot to mention, it sits about perfect right now. Almost dead level and the additional inch in the front helped out quite a bit.

after doing a dana 60 with bad king pins and whipped factory nylon bushings all up i can say this .

the bronze bushing helped a LOT on this truck . no death woddle with new master king pin kits and bronze bushings and crane off road spring eliminator kit .

also the bronze bushings fill up the knuckle bore hole much better for less room to play / slop around like oem .

oh ya this truck was running 15+ year old whipped tsl sampers up the highway at 60 mph no problems.

crane spring eliminator kit . no washers used also just bushing only.

buy the way he now has 46" m/t claws and does just fine :thumb:

The bronze bushings are a great upgrade IMO. I have been running WFO springless setup with the bronze bushings for a couple years on my K5 with no issues ( no street use) and a standard spring setup with bronze bushings on my V3500. I didn't go springless on my street rig only because I had the steering arm already, but if I was getting new arms I definitely would.

Joe (Zeus33) is running a springless setup with the bronze bushings I believe on his big dually running XMLs or some mil tire variant for several years. He may be able to give you some feedback.

Have you tried the fender washers in the spring cups yet? Takes less than an hour and a couple of bucks. Worked on a dually I used to have.

Yep, done that.

I'll see what the kid wants to do.

We could do a little more shim in the king pin, for little of nothing as well.

To be honest, the hydro assist would be cheap as well. I have a cylinder and all the mounting as well as the caps for the box. All I would need to add is the hydraulic lines.

I got my lines made at Parker, for about $30/line

What change did you make when this started happening?

Bigger tires!

Actually, it happened from time to time before the bigger tires but now its always.

Tomorrow the tires will be balanced and i'll throw the fronts on the back and vice versa. Don't think that will do anything but worth a try. Also shimmed up the king pin spring a touch tighter.

If this all fails, we'll go hydro assist and forget about it.

I use to run 37" hummer tires on my dana 60 . did them balanced and un-balanced no major changes .

but years in the tire shops I have seen weird problems . . . .

I would try swap end to end first .

I'd love to try one thing at a time to figure out what the cause is, however, I'm a little bit up against the clock on this one. Need it driving and out of the way.
