Cylinder heads

in video I saw your fan shroud was missing, do have one ? is it installed ? If not you probably want one installed before full summer hits.

Wtg on getting all that done. esp Ca smog. what were the numbers might be able to help dial it in a little better.

I know you enjoyed the 100 mile drive, but 3 mins at 2000 rpm is enough to get the cat hot :saweet:
Hey Wes, I did install the shroud. I’ll post the numbers in a bit when I go out to my truck, I’m going to increase the timing and re dial the idle screws for better performance now that smog is done lol. I drove a hundred miles just for the joy ride and to help brake in engine more. After driving it I’m going to have to get my transfer case rebuilt soon. I can kinda hear/ feel it while driving not sure if that’s normal on a 4x4 truck since this is my first

And also I’m thinking of putting a different Edelbrock carb, mechanic told me I should go with 750 cfm, I was thinking more like the 650 cfm, avs model. I was just going to disconnect the smog lines and cap them off

Almost everyone goes to big on carb .

If you do the calculator i am sure the 650 you have is just fine .
The carb I have is the smog legal one and it’s only 600 cfm. I was told from a family friend that you only need about 600-650 for a stock 350. Family friend was a funny car mechanic but he passed away years ago so I can’t ask him anymore mechanic questions.

The larger carb will only add to top end horse power. The 600 in a square body 4x4 is going to be fine. Only if you end up pulling a lot steep hills might notice running out of carb

Gm tbi 2 barrel on a 350 was just under 500 cfm and did just fine over the years . Guys even modified them / burned custom chips and still they flowed just fine .

Sorry to keep bothering you all but I got a question. So I’ve trying to dial in my carb and timing, I noticed my timing mark jumps around a few degrees, doesn’t seem normal to me. Any thoughts of why this is? I did disconnect vacuum advance and plugged it also checked for vacuum leaks and there are none.

I am sorry I don't remember the background of this engine, is it rebuilt or just changed some parts?
An old stretched timing chain could cause this.
Also issues with the weights and springs in the distributor could as well

Brand new 383 stroker, everything new

It's probably a misfire or something like that, which affects the vacuum, which moves the vacuum advance. If it's jumping around with no vacuum to the can, it could be something loose in the distributor, like slop in the weights or the vacuum advance not being tight. It's possible the pickup coil is weak and not getting a good signal. Kind of chicken and egg here - does the RPM vary because timing is shifting or vice versa.

Ya I’m thinking it’s something to do with distributor, I’m headed out of town but when I get back I’ll check it out. I bought distributor off Amazon. I wanted a msd distributor but now I’m thinking it’s a knockoff. I still have my older distributor

Honestly the truck runs and drives and I might just be paranoid because it’s a new engine. I just don’t want anything to go wrong after all the $ I put in it lol
