so for a newbe with a doubler driving on the street and a auto trans .

do you get more driveline clunk / play when on/off the gas ?and FYI : i still have full floor carpet installed in the cab i can here it threw .

otherwise it seems o.k. driving . i do need to check some stuff after the first drive tho to make sure its all doing o.k.

Mine has no new or original noises from a non doubler set up (it is a sm465 which should be more noise)

No pinion or u joint issues? I know you were just in all that stuff. Maybe a good once over...

I would say there is no noticeable change.
Now a Detroit install yes. Theres a huge change in that one.

i have had detroit in rear before of another old truck i know how hey feel .

14ff i just re-installed the guts that were removed before storage for years . 44k miles on them in same housing same shims and backlash 6tho 5-8 spec . gov-loc rear .

this doubler was my first build almost 10 years ago i never got to use yet .

th400 same trans from old truck and only did a transgo shift improver kit / left out the acumulator spring aspr @Greg Ducato said . swapped in aluminum piston for accumulator . greg modified the gov for little more stretched out shifts over the stock gm crap .

drive shafts fresh re-tube both and spicer joints i checked my self and lubed . spicer slip with hardly any play at all . watched the rear one get made my self nice smooth no wobbles in slip joint up to around 5k rpm .

i will drive it a bit more and get a better feel of exactly when its doing it .

went out for another slow drive . if on gas then off its there . also did it with hardly any gas pedal movment at all and still clunk .

put it back on the shop lift and rechecked the rear 14ff feels the same . but i think its up in the doubler someplace . man i hate to have to pull that big ass sucker out .

I get a deceleration clunk on the street when I let off the throttle at 20-30mph. I’m pretty sure it’s the 205.

ya if anywere i think its in there my self .

i think i might not have shimmed the center bearings for the idler gear cluster correctly for end play and left it loose not knowing any better way back when i built this .

I had a gear chatter sound on deceleration with my doubler. But it was only when I was in 4wd. When I stayed on the throttle, it never did it. I never did figure out what it was.

Mine isnt perfect...I get some vibes from the 205. Want to re-balance the rear shaft before any 205 work. I do notice a decent amount of gear chatter on decel.

Couple different topics getting mashed up here. Most of the time if you have a gear chattering kind of noise on decel at highway speed it's a driveline vibration. The 205 is really good at transmitting driveline noise and we're really good at building driveline vibrations for it to amplify. The reason you pick it up on decel is that's when the gears aren't mashed together but the shafts are still spinning fast.
sweetK30s problem is probably drivetrain slack from stacking 2 more splined connections into the system. There's not much to do about that beyond not adding a detroit/grizzly to the mix.
Keep in mind that the idler gear may move around in the case a little but it's not an active part of the system when you're in rear drive only and if it's around factory spec (0 to .002") it's not making much noise. I suspect you're just feeling the slack. Different people are tuned in differently to the rig. You're probably picking up more than others.

thanks for stopping in @Stephen :waytogo:

ya i kind of figured the nature of the beast . i was just going to drive it till the problem comes dropping out .

i did talk to greg ducato @ pheonix trans who helped me out with the shift kit / gov mods / red strip modulator . he said try turning the modulator screw out counter clockwise and see if this helps . might be my combo is a hair light on line pressure when off the throttle . its a good mid 50k mile oem gm th400 trans with new red strip modulator valve installed and nylon line for the vac signal to it . he had me turn it in clockwise 3 full turns for the fact of the higher flowing nylon line over the gm restricted crimp end line . so thats my next step to try in the system .

the doubler was one i put together way back in the day and never used until now . link here to the build up https://ck5.com/forums/threads/4l80...05-ord-doubler-3-sticked-its-all-done.253000/

its sat so long i figured for now i would just used atf in both to wash / flush out any old dried up assembly lube and give everything a good splash coat of lube . then in a few 100 miles or so i was going to drain and fill with gear oil unless you think its o.k. for both to have atf . i know 205 had atf in later years from the factory so i figured the 203 range box is no different that the 205 so it got atf for now also .

i am almost done buttoning up the little jobs on this . hope to be driving it in the next few days for some good road miles and tuning of the efi system .

and here is the angles of the t-case and 14ff yoke with drive shaft slope . https://ck5.com/forums/threads/drive-line-angle-help.335416/ this truck has around 3-4" total lift for a std cab long bed . https://ck5.com/forums/threads/budget-beater-went-hunting-today-and-only-seen-tracks.332759/

ATF is fine as long as you want to run it. I've seen an old bearing life chart that showed gear oil having better bearing life but it was comparing DEX3 and we're a long way past that now. Regardless it's not going to hurt anything if you procrastinate on the drain and replace job.

ya i didnt think so . and its dex3/mer spec atf . . . and its even used :rotfl: from my th400 in front of it and was almost new red and figured why waste it for a basic lube / flush job in these old units .

well 15-20 miles town / city driving today . she didnt get any better or worse per say . so run it till something pops i guess .

so i road tested the truck today no carpet or insulation . i know the sounds were from 12 years of my old truck just metal floor and same th400 with 205 only both had 50k miles on them .

well lets just say i have marbles rolling around bad on the inside of the 203 i think . and that drive line clunk is a MASSIVE gear bang i think from end play some place .

i sure hate to tear this whole thing apart for this problem . but at this point i might just say screw it and swap my np205 back on and call it good for now on this truck as i just need it to drive . only reason for the doubler kit was the fact i had it already done and figured why not use it .

any ideads guys ? @Stephen @1977k5 @Rugby_7 or others with a ord doubler ?

yes i could . but i got less than 60 total miles on this unit now and this much noise i think = remove and tear down .

like i said my old truck with same trans and a 205 that were gm mated orignal with 50k miles on them didnt sound 1/10th as loud with no carpet .
