Fuel Pump Access hatch

In regards to the posted pic by @Chevy350Ben you’re saying go about 2inches further to the passenger side or on the other side of the ridge? Got it.

Initially, when I cut the hole, I didnt plan on making the bracket and dropping the cut piece back in. Without the bracket below it, the hole would have be perfect, I think. Although, the way it is is still workable, just a little snug for my ogre claws to get in there and manipulate wrenches. I may go back and re-do it as I havent filled my gas tank yet, so it wouldn't be that big a deal.

Looks about right. It appears from the picture that @Desert_K5 posted the passnger side of the hatch is just over the third hump from the wheel well

On Merrick garage vid he had it about 23’ from the edge on both sides. I want mine more towards the fuel fill tube and just shy of flush with the driver side of the in take fuel pump. Anyway.... just running it by here before I end up with 20 different starter drill holes.. hahahahahaha

I like the tool but I’d like to confirm my rough measurements...

I’ll probably use metal screws once I get there

If you don't mind manual labor, you can get Nut-Serts from Dorman and install them with two wrenches,no need for the tool..
You could use clip nuts like the ones that hold the inner front fenders to the fender too..

Sure is hard to commit to starting this. I don’t want to screw it up. Hahahahahahaha

I wonder if anyone who's done this mod got hassled by Customs or the cops ,thinking it was a "hide" ?....

Maybe I’m making too much out of this but I just don’t see how you can do this by hand unless you have hands & forearms like the Hulk. Best of luck dude.

Im going to try.... if I can’t manage it then I’ll just leave the cut and put a rug over it until I can drop the tank.

Tin snips work better than you may think. I have a cheapo set from Menards. I had to trim the inner fenders on my 59 Apache to clear some control arms. I used tin snips for it and just went back with a file to clean up the cuts.

I have two of these old Bernz-O Matic hand powered sheet metal nibblers ,they'll cut 16 gauge steel, but are rough on your hands and muscles--they have 3 blades, one for metals, one for plastics, and one for "shapes"...one of them only cost me $1 at the flea market,in a bucket of old tools..

They also sell more powerful ones with longer handles--prices range from $10 to $100+ depending on the brand...I'd say buy one that you can get blades for in the future, that may not be possible with cheap china no-name ones..

I much prefer electric shears or nibblers now since my hands ache for weeks after using them with tools like these ...but a sabre saw with fine tooth metal blades also works well, just buy plenty of blades because they like to snag and break easily..I used 32 TPI blades to cut a 55 gallon drum up to install a wood stove door kit and I used up 4 blades...

I'm glad I searched and saw this. I'll be replacing my pump this weekend (lost count how many times I've replaced it). I'll also be doing this with the Marine hatch.

I have the hatch just need to get it done. It’s too hot in AZ from me to fiddle around with this right now. Good luck
