GsxrMike's build thread...Frostbite 2011 Pictures are in!

The seal should ride right where you are measuring.

What brand and part # seal do you have?

Well now I am pissed. I bought nationals but I just ran down to get the part # off of the box and they are motor city. I hate orielly's. Anyways...

Motor City S-2081

I matched them up in the store and they seemed perfect.

Fwiw the Spicer # is 37729, maybe somebody can cross the number over.

Its all good. I've been meaning to go to my local oreilly's and give the manager an ear full anyways. Guess I'll call it a night. Another quick questions though, my new hubs came with new bearing races but no new bearings. I have a set of used bearings with matching races out of my old hubs. Can I use the old bearings with the new races?

Thanks for all of the quick help! CK5 Rocks!

Good luck getting the old races out in one peice those suckers are pressed in there good. I had to drive a screw driver behind the edge and taco it becuase of the flange it backs up to. I think i managed to get one out with no trouble though but thats the one I used to drive the new races in. As far as using old bearings and new races I was always told that was a no no due to the surfaces wearing together and thus are "mated".

Well I have the old races out already with no problems. Should I drive out the new races and install the old or maybe just get new bearings? I have timpkin bearings now and they seem to be in fine condition. I was always told the same about not mixing bearings ect but this is a trail only rig and won't see any highway miles. Maybe 100-300 miles/year?

I guess if its on the cheap then what does it matter. Worse comes to worse and you weld the races to the bearing at some point and then you HAVE to change them :) Im sure you wouldent be the first person on the planet to mix races and bearings ya know.

I just dropped well over $1000 in this axle not including the cost of the axle. I don't know where you think i'm being cheap? I just wanted to know if I should knock out the new races and install the old of if it would be ok to drop the old bearings into the new races.

I'd spring for new bearings. One less thing to worry about or have to fix later. They are kinda spendy though if memory serves.

So is National brand good enough? Advance has the bearings I need. The bearings I have are Timken and I would prefer not to skimp on bearings. Where is the best place to buy/best brand to buy? What does Oreilly's sell?

Mixed bearings? On a trail only rig? Don't worry about it, it won't magically explode, I promise ;)

Kind of what I was thinking, it will see the occasional road use but only maybe 10-15 miles at a time going no faster than 55mph. I will throw them in tonight and get it buttoned up. Thanks for the help!

Those are the 287s races arent they? If they are, arent the bearings and races sold seperately? Bearings asa 287 and races as a 287s or something like that?

Major SNAFU! What the hell are up with my new calipers? I installed one and it was extreamly difficult to get the bottom retainer piece in and then I noticed that the calipers are curved which is causing interferance.

This pic you can see the caliper is riding up over the retainer piece.

This pic shows how the caliper is tappered. WTF? Is this normal?

This pic shows how far I can get the retainer piece in until it gets in a bind.

The calipers I got are for a 1980 K30 front axle. They should be correct right? I don't see how I could be doing this wrong!:confused::confused:

Yeesh calmness I wasent calling you cheap i was saying if you just wanted to drop the old bearings in the new races thats a cheap way out and like some one else said im sure they wont expload on you. :haha:

As oposed to the expensive way of buying all new bearings.

Sorry I'm not a morning person! :doah:

I reread the post in the afternoon and realized you probably didn't mean anything by it.

Sorry!:wink1:

You realize that the caliper brackets are not identical from left to right, right? I mean that if you put the drivers side caliper bracket on the passenger side, the calipers won't bolt on properly. Don't ask how I know that. :doah:

I know it sucks, but try putting the caliper on upside down and if it fits like that, you gotta swap the brackets.

Edit: And if you're like I was, you're going to head out to the truck and realize you spent the last couple hours dialing in the bearings only to realize you have to do them all over again. :(

bracket 3464L/3465R. I just cleaned mine up enough to see that on them.
