"Hardcore" 89 (Black and Blue). IT RUNS, DRIVES, AND STOPS. BUILD ON HOLD

If you popped your cherry on the bender.......i think its safe to say, you're doing it wrong :dunno::haha:

Can someone show this guy how to properly use a bender? :haha:

Keep up the great build man!:thumb:

:haha::haha: Man that didn't come out right!

You should take a look at the doubler. With your ingenuity, you should be able to assemble it. I think you would like it better because you made it, just like the rest of your truck. Besides, you can find a used adapter plate for a couple hundred or less, and the NP203 goes for about $150 most of the time. I don't think the 205 is very much either. How much is an Atlas? $1,500?

Ya know I have thought about it, but if I did the doubler I think I would definitely lean towards the 3:1 Lomax kit as well. No doubt the doubler is the cheaper option though. The Atlas 4spd is $$$! Maybe I'll search around craigslist to see what kind of deals I can find on cases.

I'm not even sure what I need besides a 203/205. There are several variances. I have a TH350 now that originally had a 208 behind it so I'm pretty sure it has a longer than normal output. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Ok now I am considering the 241/205 doubler. That will satisfy my Atlas urges and keep the weight down some! :waytogo: Gonna browse around some for the cases.

Ok Bumper update!

Got my old winch plate cut up some, and the new side plates clevis points are in work.

Cutting up old mount.

I also removed about an inch from the top plate where the fairlead mounts were before. The new mounts will be on the main tube.

New side plates and the smaller ones will sandwich the main side plates and make up the clivis points.

Going to weld all the seams up to make the clevis points and the holes that are cut out will be plug welds. 1" may be a little big, but too late now :doah:

Silver sharpie showing the hole for the clevis, the bolt holes, and where the main tube will attach as well. I just drew them on real quick For illustration purposes only.

A 241/205 doubler is definitely lighter than a 203/205 doubler, but I'm sure it is still heavier than an Atlas.

241/205 is the way I want to do it....someday.

The 241 is an aluminum case? Which side is the output on? Or does it matter when doing a doubler?

Yes, the 241 is aluminum. Early 241s were passenger side drop, late 241s were driver side. When building a 241/205 doubler, use a 241 with the front output opposite the 205 (use a driver drop 241 with a passenger drop 205).

The front output portion gets cut off of the case anyway, but using a driver drop eliminates the need to flp the case over and move the vent lines and such. 38377k5 did it with a pass drop. Its just a little more work. The driver drops seem to be easier to find and cheaper and I can sell my current 241 to offset some of the cost so :waytogo:

Yeah I'm sure its still heavier than an atlas, but if I can get the cases for cheap/nothing I can deal with that!

Is Duffy still making the shafts for 241/205 doublers? The last I remember seeing is that no one was sure one way or another. Anybody know?

I'm not sure. I am going to call him today. He is almost local to me. Another guy on a local board has a source to get shafts splined so that is my backup plan.

Cool. Keep us posted. I'm interested as I'd love to run one of those doublers.

Took a couple days, but I got a PM back from him on Pirate.

241 kits are in stock.

$499 for the kit
$250 for just the intermediate shaft

Got both side plates done for the new center section of the bumper. Still need to drill the clevis hole on one side, but pretty much done.

I didn't like how it looked with the "plug welds" exposed like this.

So I filled them in :thumb: I think its safe to say they will do a good job of holding things together.

Both plates fully welded at each seem and the plug welds filled and ground smooth..mainly for aesthetics.

I have to disagree here. My 241 was out of a '90 chevy and the 205 was out of 70s ford. Both drivers drops. What would be the advantage of use opposing side drops? Am super happy with the doubler though. Also on a side note when Mnorby and I where down in South Dakota over july 4. There was a guy with a jeep in our group that has an Atlas. Norby(203/205) and I where using our front digs at will. Every time we told the jeep guy to front dig or use front only just to turn harder, he couldn't get the atlas shifted into front only. After asking if something was wrong or what the deal was, he told us he researched on pirate and that is a common problem with the atlases. Not being able to disengage the rear end without being on level ground. Rolling also IIRC Just some food for thought.

Wow, that to me would be totally unacceptable... Pay that kind of money and not work properly... I'd be pissed...

Tell me about it. Norby and i where getting irritated by it just spotting him. Guess thats how they are according to guys on pirate. No reason to investigate it myself.
