How to remove trim, molding, and glass on a Suburban? Prepping for paint.

From day 1. Its not that it looks bad, but its not as shiny as the hood. The whole hood is very shiny like glass. Its just that I see the ultra shine of the hood, and then not the rest of the truck is quite that good. The other strange thing is that, the closer you are to it, the better it looks. 3' away it looks awesome and perfect. 10' away and the right angle and lighting, and you can tell that some areas could be shinier. Is it typically common practice to cut and buff a base/clear vehicle?

generally, your doing it for dust or orange peel...

i know you didn't pay a ton of money, but i'd bring it by maaco and say something... maybe they'll wheel it for ya for free...

Its not that bad. I dont know if it warrants that. Mostly i just dont want to leave it there for who knows how long again.

So i just went out there and looked at it. Im starting to feel like the "dull areas are infact orange peel. I'll try at some point to get a couple close up pics.

Interesting. I'll take some upclose pics another time and post them. In the mean time it still looks good.

Just to clarify, im definitely not dissatisfied with the paint job. I knew going in what i was getting. I feel like they could have done a worse job and i would still be satisfied for the money. Beats the ever living **** out of the way it looked before! Which was awful! All i need is for this paint to have paint that isnt all trashy looking like my old stuff, have no dents like i used to and just keep the rust off for the next however long until i get a "real" paint job. And for the money, i got everything i wanted. Imperfections? Yea, several. But i went to maaco. Its to be expected. But, now, it just doesn't look like a piece of **** and does look pretty decent. Anyway, just wanted to clarify.

The first time in a long time that the rain outside doesnt add to a rusty roof.

Oh no! Its outside LOL! My roof was such a mess before and now in the last two years my burb has only spent two nights outside, I feel bad about it for some odd reason. BTW are you driving yours now?

Fraid i might be starting the "maaco screwed me" Portion of this thread soon... Staring to have tiny bubbles pop up in some places... Hopefully the warranty covers it.

If I remember correctly, I think bubbles are an indication of out-gassing...which I think happens when you don't let the base dry enough before putting on the clear....I could be wrong.

Uh, oh... Well, that is a drag. You’ll have to get us some pics so we can see what this is all about. I would expect Maaco would stand behind any issues that “pop up” (hehe, pun accidently intended). Have you taken the Sub over to show them yet? The rig looks mighty good in pictures!

No i havent. We throw a halloween party at my place every year so this week is devoted to prep work. I will take it down there next week on a dry day and see what they say.

Here is ac ouple pics of the bubbles that i took today. THere is definitely more as time goes on.

Just read your thread for the first time.
Looks awesome untill the last pics...sorry to see that!
Hope they fix it for you.
Other than that it looks real good...nice job putting it back together man! :thumb:

Took it to maaco today. They are going to warranty it. It was almost comical the way the owner and head painter were saying different things... Owner was coming up with all kinds of far fetched possibilities where as the painter came right out and said they must have had water in rye air lines. Anyway, they want me to keep it another month for t to keep curing and then bring it in.

Well that is good. As long as they are going to fix it then who cares what the cause was. They could have told you that was a normal characteristic of that type of paint job. Hopefully the second trip through the paint booth will be the charm :waytogo:

Just hope that the painter is good at blending....that's just inexcusable that a professional shop would have water in the lines....

Sounds like they are going to have to re paint the whole thing. I personally think that it was becuase they painted the roof the day before the rest of the truck. I think that the surface was contaminated while it sat waiting for the next day. But who knows...
