Using a proven wheeling truck with another driving truck, plus more parts.
Yeah and I wasn't meaning to point it that direction! Lol why you guys always gotta go there...

Sadly, when I got it, the floor boards were trashed. The rubber mating had never been taken care of, and true to first gen form, the rot went clear through the rocker boxes. But I wanted the top off to throw some tube in for the cage.
I cut the rocker boxes out and trusted the outer floor back to the frame with angle iron ( it was free). On top of all this, free 1/8" stamped and galvanized sheet sheet was crudely formed to replace the floors. Everything below got cut off, all the way around, including both bumpers. The tank in the rear, a 31 gal, was in the way. Removed and a poly tank was added to the bed.
At the time I worked on a lot of heavy equipment, with pile of iron to sort thru. 3" tube steel was free, so it replaced the rear bumper. 3/8" plate was free, crudely fabbed up the shackle flip and front winch bumper. Small skid plate from AH loader bucket stock protects the 205. My neighbors friend took $100 for the antique Ramsey on the front.
The lift cost me $200. Front 4" spring were almost new, and added some 3/8" plate for shackles. The rear, well, I'm not really sure what they are. Only 2.25" wide with an offset center pin.
What was going to be a weekend fishing vehicle quickly spiraled ever further Might As Well until it was locked on 3/4 axles and ~5" of lift. I had never been off road like this in my life. It's second trip out was Moab

My son likes it a bunch too! He couldn't wait until I let him drive it to school! He wanted to park it next to some obnoxious kid's late model car. He knew that with the doors off, he could still get out even with it parked close to the line! 
So we took it to BB15, and had a blast! I had started teaching my son a manual trans when he was 10, so he has enough experience to drive this wherever! He knows that he isn't a pro, but compared to kids around him....

And I will remember for years, the experience of driving on Hwy 128, coming out of Moab, my son and I in an old K5, with the top and doors off, and no others in sight for a couple of miles, cruising along, just he and I. The wind and the 350 talking to us..

So I don't have the front diff cover on yet, but I have this plan that the previous owner and Martin will give a HUGE amount of crap about!
I have had a transmission with a doubler sitting here for a couple of years, but it is a 700R4 .....
Insert flames and loss of man card here.....
But I have had guys that I have know for years tell me that they like am auto better for offroad. I have a lot of the parts to do the swap, and I would hate to sell the doubler for the measly amount that I would get out of it,
So I have ordered a shifter to put it in the '72.

I only know 2 guys that wheel with a standard and I haven't seen either on a trail in quite a number of years. Probably because it's a lot of work.
Well one of them sold his K5 to me....
