I would have to look and see if the front axle 2" forward will work. Can't remember how much room the steering has.

Yeah might need some remodel

What are you thinking, 79 frame, 72s running gear/mechanicals and 90 body?

If I change springs, I will go across town and pick them up from Alcan... no problems with mounting!

I'd probably box the frame and figure a cage first.
You could prep that frame and cab long before you'd need to tear the drivetrain out of the 72

I usually go to Alcan, on the clock in the company truck, but then I buy big heavy stuff. ... not for my trucks....

Someday, you will feel how much better it is when Stephen specs out something for the boys at Alcan to build...

Realistically, swapping in those components would be simple.

Leave the Doubler in the frame and start that way
Might be a few years, but you still have use of the 72 until that day comes.

End result is probably what you really wanted when you started

It is hard time leave some stuff sit the long, but at least I have had the '79 frame and doubler / trans inside for over a year now.
