K10: Built HP60/241-205 Doubler/tons of tube

yup, almost back up and running, good job.. hopefully a tight chain and new dizzy will take care of the running issues...

you probably wont have issues with the trans in your climate... good to have a gauge on it tho to make sure it's at least getting up to a reasonable temp... I found once it got to 20, 25 degrees, it really started having trouble getting to temp, but you should be ok there in sunny so cal....

I have a gauge on it. I'm more worried about keeping the temps down than warming it up but I'll just have to see what the low gearing does for me in that regard.

I don't know but it sure isn't very much motivation to go out of my way to take pictures and post them.

Thats why I said something. I like your truck too much and dont want to see you lose interest in posting updates. It would be one thing if you came on and asked about the fan before you bought it or installed it. But to beat up a guys decision about what he puts on his truck is kinda rude. Just sayin :dunno:

I think the rig is looking :pimp:  keep posting updates :D

running just thru the aux will run pretty cool even in the dead of summer... I don't think I ever saw more than 190, even when it was 100 out... most of the time it would be in the 175, 180 range...

There is a fine line between discussion and dissing.

Besides, I figger Avery's doing SOMETHING right even if y'all don't agree with his decisions. That rig is clean under the hood. With an old truck, that's a TRICK!

Got a little done this evening. I finally made the plunge and did what I knew needed to be done on the valve covers.
They were so nice it was hard to bring myself to drill holes in them. :)

I only have up to a 3/4" drill bit here at home so I borrowed an 1-1/4" bit with a small enough shank to fit my drill press here at the house from work. Driver's side is just a breather and the passenger side is a breather/PCV valve. I wasn't sure what to do but I found that combo and figured I had a PCV before so just keep running it.
I'm also on my third set of plug wires in such a short amount of time I won't even share so to put an end to that to go along with the plug boots I got from Summit I picked up some wire guides. I've used the clip on ones before and somehow they still find their way to the headers and get burned. This way they'll be clamped in place and can't budge.

It lives! I got the distributor swapped in, made the plug wires and ran them in the new dividers and got it fired up!
I just had to barely tweak the distributor to get it to settle in on 10* at idle and it runs like a champ. It hasn't ran this smoothly in years. I had to go pick up some vacuum line to run to the advance but I'm busy the rest of the night so I'll mess with it tomorrow after work and take it for a test drive.

Took a video with my phone. It's so much smoother and has better throttle response than it has in quite a while.

Yeah, when I saw what distributor you had in there, I knew you were in for a big surprise when you replaced it with the correct one.

I think you've made a good decision on the flex fan. I had a stock clutch fan get all wobbly on me one time going down the road and it let the blades eat up the radiator, causing me BIG problems. When I put the new engine in :doah:, I didn't know that it was the clutch fan that had caused my problems, so I reused it. Big mistake! It started wobbling again and cracked my aluminum water pump and almost made me over heat again. After that, I got a flex fan. Except for some extra noise sometimes, I never noticed a difference. I guess the bearing for the clutch fan went bad.

I think your fan looks far enough away from the radiator to prevent it from letting the blades flex enough to hit your nice radiator.

Oh and where did you find those flexible tranny cooler lines? I like those. I bet they're way easier to deal with that the stock style hard lines. Those things can be a real pain. Were they real expensive?

It looked like he used just standard braided stainless lines for it. Which means yeah pretty expensive.

hose, not overly pricey, but once you factor in the fittings, it gets up there quick...

The lines were custom made locally. $120 out the door for both. One is 90" and the other is 110".

I hooked up the line for the vacuum advance and buttoned up some loose wires and fired it up tonight. Let it idle for about 15 minutes and checked for leaks and watched temps on the trans and engine, everything looked good so we hit the road.
I drove around for a while and am pretty happy with it. I don't love this carb, it seems to really like running up high (3k+) BUT it doesn't load up, idles great and it at least works now. I'll look into swapping on a quadrajet pretty quick here just for the off-road characteristics.

One side affect to all of this is the trans runs a lot cooler. I used to run about 180* once things warmed up and now it sits right around 150-160* so I'm pretty happy about that.

Tomorrow night I'm going to tighten the exhaust flanges up, double check the fluids and figure out what I want to do for an ARB line. I'm thinking another stainless braided would be spiffy.

Good work, slow burn out now hahaha
