Let the build begin in 5...4...3...2...

Damn...I just realized that I didn't update this.

Well, I basically have it about 90% put together. I need new belts, a bottom radiator hose, oil/filter and antifreeze. I should have it up and running this weekend and back on the road Monday. Then I can focus on buying the last few parts needed to put the lift on in a month or so.

Last weekend, I went ahead and rebuilt my TBI unit. What a piece of cake that was! I was expecting a headache but it only took me 1 1/2 hours taking my time. The hardest part of putting everything all together was threading on the fuel lines to the back of the TBI. One side wouldn't thread, so I'd try the other line and it wouldn't thread.....what a pain.

The other P.I.T.A was ptting the core support back on. All in all, it was a lot of 2 steps forward, 1 step back all weekend with everything I touched.

I'll snap some pics in the AM of the progress I've made.

Rebuilt your TBI? Did you get a rebuilt kit? My burb is my first tbi rig and never touched it, only looked at news one.

good to hear man! i'm actually considering a 5.3l LS swap for mine now. we'll see what happens, might still stick with the TBI for simplicity. i'm glad to see you're making progress!

I got a rebuild kit from O'Reillys for $24.99. It came with all the gaskets and o-rings for it. It also came with illustrations showing you where the different gaskets and o-rings go. Like I said, it's a piece of cake to do.

Welp.....went to fire it up last night....what an epic failure! Fuel was just spraying out the back of the throttle body and pooling up on the intake. Wouldn't even fire up. Just kept turning and turning and turning but no fire.

I get to take the throttle body off the truck again and see what I focked up. :doah: I think I'm going to take up drinking like a fish again.

I will beat this SOB into submission though!!

It's running again!!!!

I finally got some time to work on it and got it running just 10 minutes ago. It turns out that when I put the pressure regulator housing back on the TBI unit, the gasket slipped and was leaking like a sieve. I just re-set the gasket and hooked everything back up and she runs great.

I have to get 2 new headlights because the old ones were crap and literally fell apart when I took them out, change the oil and trim my new fan shroud because the fan is hitting the new one, go over all of my connections to make sure they're tight and I'm good to go. :woot: I also have to run the old gas out of it too. It's been in there since May. Once I run it out of gas, I'll change the fuel filter, fuel it up and call it good.

Now to save for my tires and on to the lift!

Well, after driving it yesterday and today, all I can say is....WOW!....what a difference!! The idle is so smooth now, you have to actually turn down the radio to listen for the engine to see if it's still running. It climbs through the gears nice and steady with very good power and it sounds healthy. I have one small leak from the oil cooler lines but to hell with it, I'm not too eager to tackle it just yet. :waytogo:

So to recap.....

new fuel pump, injectors, EGR valve and solenoid, plugs, wires, cap and rotor, fuel filter, MAP sensor, intake manifold gaskets, junkyard power steering bracket, rebuilt the TBI unit and all new vacuum lines throughout.

Daaaaammmn. And that's what I have to look forward to with my own engine.

DAMMIT DAMMIT SONUVAB!TC#!!!!!

Well today I hop into the beast and fire it up and she just won't idle worth a damn. I chug along puffing out black smoke and pick up my daughter at day care and go home. At this point I'm about to roll this SOB over a cliff.

So I just took the air cleaner lid off and had my wife start it up and gas is just pouring from the drivers side fuel injector. It's almost as if the O-ring split or something. I'm getting so tired of monkeying with the TBI on this thing. Looks like I'm taking out the injector tomorrow to see whats wrong again.

I"M GONNA WIN. :flipoff1:

Damn!! Well, it's running like it did before I tore it apart in June. After replacing the torn O-rings, I started it up and what a surprise I got. It's got a surging idle, poor performance, running rich and a slight hesitation on acceleration. I checked my timing and it's way retarded. I had it at 4* BTDC and now it's a tick under 0*. So, in the morning, I'm going to go and buy a knock sensor to see if it's telling the ESC to retard my timing.

If that doesn't solve anything, I'm gonna drop the tank next weekend and see if the rubber line off of the fuel pump is split or bad in any way. I'm running out of things to check here. :doah:

damn man... i hope you kick this things ass soon, also hope i dont run into the same **** when i drop my new engine into my sub.

I hopped in Fillmore this morning to go to work and it ran perfectly again. :dunno:

I have no idea what the fook is going on now. I bought the knock sensor and a new air filter so as soon as the rain lets up a bit, I'm going to work on it again. I'm also going to set my timing back at 4*. Fun fun fun........:doah:

Ok, here's an update:

Friday, I got on the highway and it ran ok, not great. I could smell unburned gas coming from the engine bay and it had a slight hesitation as I cruised at 65mph. Wife and I drove it tonight to bowling and on the way home, I got a SES light. :woot:

I think this is the first time I was happy to see a SES light come on. Anywhoo, I got a code 42 and a code 44. Code 42 is "fault at electronic spark timing circuit" and code 44 is "oxygen sensor lean condition".

So, since the distributor looks like crap inside, (rust, carbon build up), I'm just going to buy a new distributor. Summit has one for $83. I'm also going to check my fuel pressure to see if it's up to snuff as I suspect that the dude that put in my fuel pump didn't change the sock filter or the section of rubber hose that's in the tank.

I'm sooo close to just yanking the EFI and throwing a carb on this thing.....

Well, it's been awhile so I thought I'd give a little bit of an update on where the ol' burb is at.

I haven't been able to install the lift yet as I still have a few parts and pieces to acquire. I'm a fan of doing it right once and not just slapping it together for looks. So, after the silly season is over, I'm hoping to buy my frame reinforcer, extended brake lines, swaybar disconnect and most importantly.......tires. I keep seeing a set of 5, 33" mud terrains on the local cragislist for $250.

I was finally found some time to replace my leaking oil cooler line today. I took the old one out and took it to Napa and they were about as helpful as a shovel with a rope handle. :doah: After they gave me a bunch of crap about having to rebuild it but not knowing if they could, I just took it to Carquest and bought a brand new hose for $50. I was able to slap it in in 5 minutes and no more leaks!

My charcoal canister is not soaking up the fumes from the tank or something because I get a very strong raw fuel odor in the engine compartment and eventually into the cab. It gives my wife a headache so that means I have a headache as well. This is about the only thing left to work out on the old girl this winter so I can take a break and work on some 1/48th scale model airplanes and relax.

Man Danny sounds like your Sub has taken you through the wringer. Good to hear you are keeping at it though!

I know the feeling about that SES light... keeps running weird, and you finally see it as a glimmer of hope!

How many miles are on it? I had to replace my O2 sensor when I got mine, at 150,000 miles it was overdue. It had passed smog still (yeah, I'm in CA) because it still functioned once warmed up.

I've gone through too much trouble with my distributor though. The pickup inside... grrr... thankfully I had a friend of the family willing to take that task on, as I was working too much at the time to deal with it. I will be carrying a spare distributor, in addition to the spare coil and HEI module I have now. Pickup goes bad? Engine dies. And I had no SES light.

Model airplanes sure do help with relaxing :)

I've got just under 150,000 miles on this beast right now. I had a hole in my return line that I fixed last week. That was the source of the raw gas smell. But after putting gas in it a few days ago, I got another code 44 so me-thinks I'm going to replace the pick-up coil and ignition module.

And now, we got a bunch of snow along with sub-zero temps 4 days ago so there is ice, snow and slick roads all over. I threw it into 4 wheel drive on my way to work the other night and all I got was a grinding, clunking noise with no 4x4. :eek1: It turns out, I stripped out my front slip yoke. It just never seems to end for me but I can't give up now because I'm too damn stubborn.

Oh, and I'm not working on a 1:48 airplane this time around, I decided to build a 1:25 1969 Nova SS 350. So you see, I'm still constantly working on cars. :haha:

Your burb must be running good now, I swear I saw you cruising down Monad a little after 5 yesterday......and no I'm not stalking you.

:haha::haha:Yeah, I was in that area. I was trying to get ahold of a co-worker that works off of 36th W. Fillmore is running about 90% of normal right now. I really think I need to up my fuel pressure because it will spit out a code 44 every now and then. Then, I need to go to a junkyard and get a new front driveline, and then.....and then....and then....:doah::D
